Some Believers deny themselves their inheritance of life in the Spirit because they believe Christ our life – the incarnation – lacks the substance of laws and specific actions. It’s not solid enough for these concrete thinkers. They need to understand that specific action of the Godly kinds is ours when Christ has come in our flesh.*

We can live from the law or attached to the law, which is the same thing. So situated, we are not accessing grace or the Spirit, even if life in the Spirit is the inheritance of all who believe. We must be immersed in it, which means baptised into a state of being. It’s never a matter of grabbing externalities.

We can live a godly life of sorts from the law but such a ‘life’ is more akin to a disease or disability than the reality of sonship and daughtership.

You are not forced to live in fullness as Jesus pointed out with the image of the man who buried his inheritance in the ground because he would not believe that Jesus’ offer of His life as our life was credible.

Here this man puts more faith in his doubt than he does in Christ.

‘Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them’ MATT 25.24-29 NIV.

The worst thing about this situation is that this man who is existing on scraps is in danger of losing even the drops of water that he thought were a river.

For the law addict our works are a transaction and a contract. In this view God is an abstraction and we become ideologues. The effect is to lose our humanity and Godliness under in the briar bushes of religion. Legalisms are a pale and suffocating influence on spirit and life. Stephen Morrison explains why.

“Jesus Christ is true God of God who has come amongst us, and true man of man who has come from within us. Theology calls this the hypostatic union. Jesus Christ has forged an indestructible union between God and man, enacting a completed covenant in Himself.

The hypostatic union is central to the Gospel. Without this fact there can be no Good News. If Jesus Christ came only as God among us, then God has not reached the human race. He has not reached us in our darkness. If He is only God and not man, then He has only transactionally saved us, doing something for us, apart from us, over our heads. He has failed to reach us in the depths of our fallen existence.

The Gospel, while it still may be true, would be irrelevant, for it would have no practical effect upon our human nature. The Gospel would fail to affect us in the depths of our humanity. Our humanity would remain unchanged by God. If Jesus is to save us, He must be both God and man.” (1)

It's a fact that a law derived gospel has little effect on human nature, which is why Paul calls this ‘no gospel at all.’ The radical and amazing effect of Christ our life is that He becomes us. That’s real life and real righteousness.

* This scripture indicated that ‘the law come in our flesh’ is a ploy of anti-christ,
