Jesus impartation of Himself to us is a holistic grace in which we are graced forgiveness for sins and graced with His life. The righteousness of Christ is not an abstraction. It is Christ Himself. The triune God is righteousness and Christ in us is this righteousness in us. But this is not a collection of ultra-pieties. It is God woven into our being on account of Christ come in our flesh. Christ in us, Christ our life, is the spirit and life that is the reality of God in our being. Living from this incarnation we are fully alive and not merely undead as we would be if we remained in the law.

Christ come in your flesh results in the glory of you.

Myk Habets observes that “Torrance’s concept of participation in Christ finds further expression in the notion of the ‘wonderful exchange’ (mirifica commutatio), according to which Christ takes upon himself the sinful nature of humanity and bestows his own righteousness upon that humanity.” (1)

Christ’s righteousness is not the law. That would be to reduce His ministry to us to an impartation of the knowledge of good and evil which is the mode in the pre-cross world of Adam and Moses. Christ’s righteousness is Himself woven into our being to make us an expression of our Father - which is to be a son or a daughter of God.

“By means of a ‘wonderful exchange’, ‘reconciling exchange’, ‘atoning exchange’, ‘sweet exchange’, or ‘atoning propitiation’, all terms Torrance uses, Christ takes what is his and gives it to fallen humanity and takes what is ours and heals, restores, forgives, and judges it within his own being and life.” (2)

Paul calls this ‘Christ our life’ which is an apt description of the adventure of an everyday life lived in oneness and companionship with the trinity. ‘When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory’ Col 3.4 NIV.

Christ has appeared in the world and when we accept His offered re-birth, He appears in us. The glory of you is the growing ability to be the self that God envisaged before creation and the glory you are becoming as you grow into your true self in Christ your life. This is a reason for personal joy and the key to great fruitfulness as you live as one of the ‘faces’ of Jesus as a person in everyday life. This is what it is to be spirit and life.

‘The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world’ JOHN 17.22-24 NIV.

God does not despise the everyday. He does not turn His Face away from pleasure, work, sport and hobbies. God incarnated Himself in Jesus Christ to be God with us. Next, Jesus incarnates Himself in us so that we are with God and God is in us and among us in the presence of those who Believe. We live in this sonship by believing. Not by earning. The gift of eternal life is God’s life in us in the present. What we become in that realm called eternal life with God, is a continuation of what began now as we live in the ignited state of Christ our life.
