To know yourself and like yourself is a life work made possible when Christ is in us and with us. The saga of salvation history rotates around the identity of God and the identity of ourselves. Who is God? Who are we? God has revealed who God is in Jesus Christ. He has also revealed who we are in Jesus Christ. The revelation of God is Jesus Christ. The mirror of the self is Jesus Christ. The self we are becoming is Jesus Christ expressed as Jim and Mary. The new creation is Jesus manifest in the world. How does this come about? It is realised when we realise and live that Christ becomes us.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20.
We have this witness within us to reveal who Jesus is and who we are as His daughters and sons. We have the Gospel of Jesus, Paul and John to steer us into the living way and away from the deadness of the law and the illusions of the tree of knowledge. Real life is not a case of doing this or that. Real life is enjoying your adventure of union with God in your growing maturity as a daughter and son.
We can choose to live this inheritance or retain ourselves in Adam. We can live as Christians who are sons or slaves because we have never exited Moses to Christ our life. So will be the sons/daughters of the slave woman or will we be sons of the Free Woman?
TREASURE IN THE GROUND OR IN YOU
‘But what does Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son’
Galatians 4.30 NIV. We can live out our lives as Christians as a live tree or a dead one.
Christ in you is the hope of glory because to be glorious is to grow in the becoming of your true self informed by the Living Light in whom you are walking. Glory is not something in the sky by and by. Glory is your emergence as a son/daughter in Christ. You are not only forgiven in Jesus. Since He lives in you, you take on His spirit and life. PERICHORESIS is a word the Church Fathers used to describe the effect of oneness with Christ. “Hidden in Christ” we are made one with the trinity. But like the trinity we do not lose our identity and unique being in this oneness. We are revealed as who we are – the sons of God. Each person is a son/daughter in a unique way and each face is an expression of Jesus.
Not a few people never get to be their real selves. Their faith is in their accomplishments, academic or commercial. This of course is a self but it’s not the who of who you are as a son of God. The greatest suffocator of the true self is religion. Our real self grows as a result of a life-baptism in Christ. We do not grow as a self when we live out of our head. We grow out of our being when our being is one with Christ.
Francois Du Toit writes, “If you can grasp and believe the truth about yourself, about how complete you are in your spirit, you will realize that everything you could ever need to make you happy is already within you. Life is not about what you do, it is about who you are. Your career, job-description or achievement can never give you a greater sense of worth and contentment than the simple awareness of who you are. Nothing you could wish to have or achieve can add more value to your life. To know who you really are is the essence of all virtue. Everything God designed you for is within you and within your reach.” (1) This is because Christ is in you and becomes your life.
