WALK THROUGH THE DOOR
God’s post-cross way is amazingly simple, yet profound and powerful. It’s Him. And it’s us. It’s both woven together. When the writer of Hebrews wrote of the ‘new and living way’ into the most holy place, he was stating in metaphor the truth about Jesus as the Door to union with God. This union is about fellowship with the trinity. It is also about union of being - an interwoveness that is only possible yet entirely ours in the Spirit.
UNWRAP IT ALL
Jesus wants us to understand this and embrace it because it is the fruit of His sacrifice and the joy of His resurrection life. ‘You will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. Dr J Baxter Kruger defines this interwoveness as “Mutual indwelling without loss of personal identity. In other words, we exist in union with the Triune God, but we do not lose our distinct personhood in the process.”
And neither does God. God is God and we are us, yet we are woven together in the Spirit of Sonship. This is quite another ‘sonship’ to any notion in which we earn this relationship. And neither is it a mere propositional statement. We and God are interwoven together not by the letter or by the law. The law separates and it does so because it is a function of the knowledge of good and evil.
Oneness of being with God, is a state of being created entirely by God and is. Function of the new covenant. It is incarnational and results in Christ come in our flesh. Life in the Spirit is Christ come in our flesh and more. It means that each of us are the manifestation of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It should be clear that when we live in the law instead of living incarnation we are living distracted.
You might be surprised at how many Believers are steeped in an old covenant mold. When they hear Paul say ‘Christ in you’ they take this as a call to internalise Christian behaviours. This is because they are looking through religious eyes. Should they ponder his ‘Christ your life,’ they take this to mean Christ assisting us to live out a righteous and moral deportment. To them it means Jesus helping us to present as a Christian religious person to the world. Of course righteousness is of value. But it’s not the new and living way. It’s not what Jesus began. Jesus began Him as us – Christ come in the flesh.
By undoing Adam, Jesus undid religion. Despite this, many devout people have made a life from religion and some have made a convoluted theology out of the law. They have made a religion out of what Jesus replaced with Himself. what they have committed their lives to is the old and dead way - not the new and living way of unceasingly unfolding life.
ALPHA AND OMEGA EVERYTHING
When Jesus declared Himself the way, the truth and the life, it was a unilateral statement declaring what was new about the new testament. The ‘new’ was that all life came from His person.
is found in relationship. Never in the
knowledge of good
There is no abstract body of ethics, rules, mores, principles and precepts hanging somewhere in space that we ‘must do.’ There is no law that exists separately from God or from you. Union with God is life. Separation from God is both the knowledge of good and evil and death. Life is relationship. Life is your union with the God who expresses His life, love and righteousness in Jesus Christ. How do we become alive. We are alive and we are righteous when we agree that Jesus is our life.
When Paul recited ‘For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory’ Paul was stating a present and future fact. He was stating that in every way Jesus is your life and that you are the expression of His life. It will be seen that His Kingdom life was never meant to be a thinly disguised and novel form of legalism with Jesus’ help.
