THE GIFT OF SPIRIT AND LIFE
Adam’s life in the knowledge of good and evil began with merchandising – a deal if you like. ‘Believe what I am telling you and there is a reward. You will be ‘as Gods.’ Thus, the old covenant was framed in the terms of a culture of a contract. This notion remains the core of religion and the engine of separationist attitudes to this day. ‘I must do something for God to earn His approval before I can begin to live in His life.’ But this is not the life of God and not what He has achieved for us. In Jesus He has drawn us into fellowship with Himself. Here we belong and here we will stay. Just agree with this and be done with the buying and selling attitude that is the stuff of all religion.
‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God’ Eph 2.8 ESV.
Either you will attempt to buy Gods favour by personal good works or marketers of religion will attempt to offer you the union with God – that is already yours – if you join with them. If you agree to support their partisan hoops and keys that purport to be the way and the life you will bind yourself to that which you have already been released: Law based religion. People taken in by this deception grope about in confusion because they have been sold an alternative gospel and they have given their lives to on-sell it to others. But you don’t have to be a marketer of religion or a Christian consumer. You already have free access to the bread of life.
Richard Rohr writes, “Do you think the soul is satisfied with this “buying and selling in the temple”? It will never be. Seeing the world in terms of such transactions will never satisfy the soul or feed the spirit because they mask reality. The purpose of prayer and religious seeking is to see the truth about reality, and to see what is. And at the bottom of what is, - is always goodness. The foundation is always love.” (1)
Your soul will never be satisfied with an old covenant mindset in the new covenant age. Your heart suspects there is more. And there is. Your spirit longs to be re-joined to its Source. Your life is Christ. You are one with God. God lives in you. And you are a son/daughter of God. None of this is of yourselves. It is the gift of God.
