I once saw a huge graffiti statement beside the railway. It read, ‘I would rather be alive than undead.’ There’s a lot in that. Jesus came to exchange undeath for life to the full. This is more than eternal life. It is SPIRIT AND LIFE.
ARE WE ALIVE?
It could be said that life is a thing in itself. But that would not be right. ‘A thing’ is not ‘itself’ unless defined by life (logos). Life is alive because life is a person – actually three persons.
Writing of life John said, ‘In Him is life and that life is the life of all.’ Jesus represented the life of the trinity. This is the life of the universe, the hub of spirit and life; the womb of ourselves and the potency of the Spirit of God. Jesus, the logos is the full representation of this life and He lives in us.
In Him all things hold together, which means that a together life in us is as simple and profound as HAVING A JESUS LIFE, which Paul called Christ our life.
‘For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together’ Col 1.16,17 NIV.
Existence has meaning, purpose and cohesion in the person of Jesus. We have meaning, purpose and spirit with life because we are part of the being of God. Not because we assented to the law or to some beliefs. Speaking to the woman at the well Jesus assured her that it was not about places of worship, days of worship or religious rites that we belong. It is because we are part of His life. Thomas Torrance wrote,
“Grace is to be understood as the impartation not just of something from God but of God Himself. In Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit God freely gives to us in such a way that the Gift and the Giver are one and the same in the wholeness and indivisibility of His grace. (1)The gift, the giver and we are one.
WHERE IS LIFE?
A talk we give is not alive because we cited a series of scriptures. A talk is alive when we are alive because we and our Father are one.
Our speech and our life is alive because those who have the son have life. ‘Having the son’ is not a work of self-effort. It’s agreeing with Jesus that we have been received into His life – and that because of the incarnation WE ARE HIS LIFE.
We are sons because we choose to live in the fact that we and our Father are one. Real life is about being (ontology). We have this being in persons – by Jesus and the trinity in whom we fellowship.
This being is never ours because we cited a scripture or asserted a doctrine. It is ours firstly because God has made it so and because we believe He did.
Don’t waste your life trying to keep close to Jesus or make yourself worthy of intimacy with our Lord. It’s already done – by Him in collision with Father and Holy Spirit. Right belief is a must because we create our own reality. A false reality suffocates the fullness of spirit and life that is ours in union with God. Believe what Jesus believes.
