A proper understanding of the new testament will reveal that the key advance for humanity is the at-one-ment – our re-union with God in the person of Jesus. This is a union that is so subtle and complete that it is best described as an interwoveness of God’s being and ours.
A dimension of this is the incarnation – the trinity in us. The Spirit of God manifesting in ordinary people is the basis of the Kingdom of God and the engine of the new creation.
INTERWOVENESS: ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
The new testament is not the law with a Jesus Boost. It’s incarnation. Paul’s gospel clearly declares that the incarnation – Christ come in our flesh as John expresses it – replaces the law of Moses with something stupendous - The life of Jesus and the trinity expressed as us. This is the bald truth. The truth that is too often blurred by religionists but which is described by Paul as the law of the Spirit of Life: Christ in you.
You may deduce that if the incarnation is what it’s all about and you are strung up in days, observances and moralisms, you must have missed what Jesus is all about. And you would be right. Father is about His Son multiplied as you and us all. In this sense Christ is the universal Christ which is what is meant by ‘Christ our life.’
Interwoveness is how we get to be alive, how we become spiritual instead of carnal and how we are the Body rather than an institution with ‘Jesus Name’. We are of the Body by incarnation - not by claiming a scripture or a position. To be the Body of Christ it helps to live from the gospel of Christ.
The manifestation of Jesus as people is how the church gets to be the Body of Christ. Christ becomes your life and by extension the life of all who allow themselves to be received into His union without conditions and additions.
MIXTURE – DEATH COCKTAIL
We can do mixture if we want. This is an amalgam of law and Christ. But in doing so we create a Frankenstein monster that is a parody of the body of Christ, electrified by the flesh – a tare that Jesus will not nurture and which the angels will uproot. Don’t be drawn into these kinds of Ishmaels.
NOT AN OPTION
We are talking here about our need to live in the new covenant, about our achieved union with God and about the end of the Adamic creation at the cross and the start of the Christ Creation at the resurrection and Pentecost. Bluntly we are talking our union with God. This achieved union is our present reality. It is our inheritance. We need to live in it and not in revisionist mindsets that re-install the old covenant law and its innate separation from God. Paul names the law of sin and death as the law of Moses because it confines us to Adam’s separation and our self-invented and denominationally induced lies about God.
‘He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life’ 2 Cor 3.6 NIV.
‘Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!’ 2 Cor 3.7-9 NIV.
‘Letters on stone’ are the laws of Moses. Laws in place during the time of separation that expressed the death Adam introduced. The ministry of the Spirit is Christ expressed as you – what Paul calls Christ our life.
JOINED TO GOD
You belong. You have been made one with God. The non-Believer needs to agree and the Believer needs to cast aside cunningly devised fables, emerge from the self-generated thickets and briar bushes of confusion and step into the plan of God and the mind of Christ.
As wonderful as Holy Spirit and the gifts are they can cause havoc in the kind of religion that is a ‘another gospel’. This is because the gifts are a function of our union with God and not a thing in themselves. They cannot function correctly if we do not live in this union. Used independently, they will cause friction and pollute the body with nonsense and flaky utterances. Nick Vasiliades writes,
FULLESS NOT PARTIAL EMPTINESS
“The gifts were given to the church that we all may attain to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Jesus Christ. But these gifts have become self-existing entities apart from the Lord and the inevitable misuse of them, particularly in the prophetic realm, has resulted in widespread confusion, distortion, damage, and even outright destruction amongst God's people. If you want to perpetuate the Charismatic dysfunction ubiquitous on the Christian landscape, this book is definitely not for you.” (1)
