It’s hard to get a straight answer out of a politician because they live to preserve their own interest and the interests of those who elected them. Like the home hoarder it’s about hanging on to their stuff but on a larger scale. Religious politicians present a religious justification for their prerogatives. False authorities present a false narrative to legitimate themselves. The god of this world has given a name that speaks to this kind of authority – the Father of Lies.
False authorities embed and institutionalise lies in doctrines that would equate their authority with that of God. Those bent on hanging on to their stuff – the dullest kind of conservative are allergic to the truth because truth threatens the stuff of their identity, status and income.
Authority is not legitimate because it is authority. It is legitimate when it is grace and truth.
‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth’ John 1.14 NIV.
The vanity of the divine right of kings is not yet dead. It seeks resurrection in the divine right of the cleric to rule over the hearts of men and women who have been too passive to step into the truth of what Jesus has done and who they are in Him.
The redoubt of the religious politician is tradition and the pseudo-reality that defines the culture of the group. This is bogus authority – authority that C S Lewis exquisitely depicted as a donkey in Aslan’s clothes. Such authority promotes tyranny of two kinds: Straight-out manipulation and control and a climate of foolish ideas. It was from captivity to this authority and this culture that Jesus came to set us free. Nevertheless, people continue to make religion out of bondage, seeking to acquire an identity from a culture of cunningly devised fables because they are too passive or two sanguine to grip the truth.
Either Christ’s accomplishments on the cross were enough or they aren’t. Of course they are. The belief that they are more than sufficient distinguishes between Jesus, Paul and John’s Gospel and make believe theologies that originate in false prophets actuated by the spirit of anti-christ. There are theologies that claim to be apocalyptic messages of hope. But because of the lie at the heart of their being they are messages of decay and death.
The Bible is clear on this. Firstly Christ is our life as affirmed by Paul and John who cite Jesus urging for all to realise that in Him we have been joined to God now and forever. ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. Not only is God’s life our life but His life – His righteousness is funnelled into us by the Spirit. Clearly many who claim to represent truth have not yet realised this - 0r if they have, they are keeping quiet about it in order to maintain their edifice and ‘system.’
The key truth of this age, which is an expression of the hegemony of the incarnation and our life in the Spirit is John’s declaration that Christ has come in our flesh. That is Christ is in us. That we are graced by His indwelling and transformed by His life manifesting as us.
‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist’ 2 John 1.7 NIV.
We are warned that to posit the flesh come in the flesh which is the law come in the flesh, is to act in the
spirit of anti-christ. The religious spirit knows that Christ accomplished the end of religion and the end of the regime of sin and death. So its ploy is to undermine and hollow out the power of Christ our life by substituting Jesus with ‘us working to validate our life.’ Much of Christianity might be seen as us working to validate our worthiness before Christ. But this is not the gospel of the Kingdom. This gospel is Christ our life.
Good theology is expressed in the fact of the vicarious humanity of Jesus: His life for all in every possible way. The convoluted nature of a theology that parades itself as truth and revelation by reversion to the law and by ignoring His explicit mediation can easily be seen by all who are willing to read the Bible through the Jesus Lens. Also read
some theology from the writings of enlightened theologians of the Christian Church and your heart will leap with hope and joy. You are already included in the family of God. Separationist theologies are a lie.
