SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT COMES FROM UNION WITH GOD
Spiritual discernment is less a spiritual gift and more a state of being. It’s source is union with God and knowing what God knows. We can have the ability to prophesy and give words of knowledge. But it does not follow that we have the gift of discernment. People can give ‘words’ and be unaware of the context in which they are given and hence unaware of the real meaning of the ‘word’.
LIFE AND LIGHT
Spiritual discernment is life. It flows largely from living in Jesus rather than in Adam or Moses. Spiritual discernment is ours when we live in our new covenant union and much restricted when we live in the separation of the old covenant and law. A life in religion suffocates spiritual discernment while the embrace of Christ as our life enhances the spirit of wisdom and revelation.
We see in ‘oneness’ with God because truth is us. As Athanasius saw, ‘The Son of God became man so that we might become God.’ Even Jesus said, ‘Ye are gods.’ We are God’s daughters and sons, incarnated with the trinity.
Salvation’ is the healing of our separation from God. How unfortunate then to embrace a form of Christianity that assumes that we are separated and that the function of religion is to undo it. That’s like carrying sand-bags from place to place for the sake of being employed.
THE NEW WINESKIN IS
The new wineskin is not a spirit-filled church, nor is it the result of rubbing Holy Spirit into the law and old covenant. The new wineskin is our post cross union with God. It’s our interwoveness with God. Spiritual discernment is much affected by our mindset - by our understanding of what our salvation is. It’s the gift of oneness with God. Richard Rohr nails it when he writes,
“Salvation (salus: healing) is not dependent on feeling or any
person's response to me. It is not a theory believed, a theology proclaimed, or a group that gives one identity. It is an inner clarity that forever allows one to recognize bogus authority and pseudo-surrender. This salvation cannot be acquired by a simple process of self-examination, new insight, or ego-possession. It is a gift received when the will has given up control and we are standing in that threshold place which allows us to see anew.”
