The mystery of The Mirror is that Jesus Christ mirrors Father and Jesus Christ mirrors you. If you are among those who have been conditioned to think that the law is the mirror of God’s personhood and also the mirror of your progress into piety this may come as a surprise or a relief. Christ is your Mirror and your life.

It’s a monstrous distortion to posit the law as representative of God’s person since the law is an abstraction. It denudes Him of personhood and shrivels His being as it does yours. You came forth from Christ and are the expression of Christ in two ways – by creation and by re-creation.

Christ is your mirror. To see Him as He is, is to see yourself. This is why we need to see Jesus as Jesus is without the encumbrances of our personal fear and misgivings and minus the distortions of religion, particularly law based religion. If we have made a saviour/mirror out of the law and pulled together a Jesus who is subordinate to this law we will have done ourselves and our family and those to whom we minister a grave disservice. We will have distorted God and abused ourselves.

Richard Rohr observes that “The restored Job and the risen Christ are images of the substantial self, no longer private, separate, or autonomous, but hidden in God. The true self is not lost in a transitory house of mirrors, but founded in the unreflected and perfect Reflector we all long for…. All we need to know is that God is looking back—and not away from our gaze.” (1)

It’s possible to go one’s entire life and not become our true self. We can live as a charade of ourselves because we have attempted to build a self from the elements of life that are separate from God or we can be a shambolic representation of our real self because we have made god out of religion and made a hash of it.

The result being that we have made a scrambled version of ourselves.

The result can be that we never lived as sons - although that is what we are - and that we never lived in the joy and glory of our un-encumbered self because we hid and marinated our being in things that were not Christ or because our ‘christ’ was such a distortion that it made us a phantom of ourselves. I’m talking of the kind of self that was never reborn because it was born into religion and performance mentality instead of Christ our life.

‘Realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20.

There is no substitute for incarnation which is Christ come in our flesh. Agree with Jesus that you have been drawn by Him into His life and this is the reality in which you live.

The Christian poverty mentality is Christ outside of you. The Believers wealth is Christ in us. Paul writes, ‘To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory’ Col 1.27 NIV.
