In a poverty mentality we live out of scarcity. We may do two things. Hoard rubbish because we live in fear of financial annihilation. So at least with our rubbish we have something even though it may be ‘something and nothing.’ Our assumption is that there is never enough and we must cling to what we have. We may live in scarcity and small mindedness, where our eyes are always on others who may appear to have more than we do. We can resent those who do better than us without the effort.
When Jesus was here in person, this provoked the jealousy of the Jewish religious leaders. Christ as our life can disturb those who cling to religion as their life or religion plus Christ or an amalgam of law and Christ or an existence inside the mythic veils of their fathers. It provokes the ire and resentment of the religious today - many of whom are suspicious of and jealous of those who live from the abundance of our new covenant generosity in Christ.
However the grace of God in Christ is abundant, unlimited and profligate. It is more than forgiveness for sin. It is a life given to you that is not yours but which becomes you. It’s the trinity incarnated in you and diffused into your being. This is the meaning of Christ come in our flesh. His Spirit manifests as Jim and Dianne. Our life in Jesus is one of abundant spirit and life.
Christian Kettler writes, ‘As common as it has been to consider Christ's death to be vicarious, carried out in our place and for us, what if we were to consider that the entirety of his humanity was lived vicariously for us and in our place?’
What if? We can live an excellent life in Jesus – particularly when the Jesus we are living in is the ‘I AM’ of life itself.
Living from an undiluted and unencumbered Jesus is life - is life to the full. Jesus lived this fullness by living entirely from His Father without dilutions and additions. You can live the same way in Him – if you are brave enough and if you are willing to be born again. This involves dying to religion and agreeing to be Jesus’ life. Being Jesus’ life has been described by theologians as living from
the vicarious humanity of Jesus. This is intense in its simplicity and infinite in what it covers. He covers every possible requirement of God and every possibly way of being you.
There is no element of your relationship with God, that is not covered in the vicarious humanity of Jesus for you.
We can grow daily in spirit and life if Christ is our life. Not so much if our aim is to bend Jesus to what we already believe and use Him and some new discovery about Him to pump up our concept of religion. We are no more at liberty to absorb any perspective on Christianity we choose, any more than we are advised to take a little mud with our water or hydrochloric acid with our orange juice.
By eating and drinking the Son of God, we have His life in us and become his life in spirit and in truth. Some believers live in a mainly stagnant mindset punctuated briefly by the occasional gleam of truth. Growing from glory to glory means growing continually into the truth of who God is, who Jesus is and who we are as a result of the successfully advanced
divine conspiracy. So we are either growing or dying.
Michael Kapler writes, “
Although I’ve now spent many years exposed to the gospel of unlimited grace and unconditional love, I still find myself in a constant place of needing to unlearn from years of traditional misinformation. I’m not blaming religion entirely; after all, I bought into much of what is taught. But until we have a complete paradigm shift from certain assumptions that have led us astray, we’ll be left with confusion and a sense of anxiety.” (1) Not to mention torpor and the walking round and round the mulberry bush of our received mythology.
The Kingdom of God as described by people like Kapler, Rohr and Francois Du Toit is exactly as described above: HIS LIFE AS OURS. And never like the veils in which many of us have come to believe. Kapler gives a list of honoured myths and veils that we can cling to in religion – because in religion we have absorbed into our souls the notion that someone has to pay – and it’s us. We have received the lie that even in regard to Jesus, this payment has to be made by us. So don’t be alarmed if the list below strikes a jarring note. It is meant to. But also keep this in mind: Christ our life and the vicarious humanity of Jesus produces whole and holy people who are the Kingdom of God. Religion does not.
• The New Covenant is an addition to the existing Old Covenant.
• We should try to live by the Ten Commandments.
• Yielding to temptation means you have fallen from grace.
• Everything Jesus said was meant for you personally.
• If you don’t forgive others, then God won’t forgive you.
• Sin will hinder our fellowship with God and may cause a separation.
• You must confess all your sins to be forgiven.
• You need to repent of your sins for salvation.
• The Holy Spirit convicts you of your sins.
These propositions will appear confusing if Christ is not our life – which He is not if we live from religion. Why? Because in religion we live in separation trying to achieve what is already ours: Union with God. Religion extends the fall and ‘sanctifies’ it as a version of Christianity.
To receive salvation simply agree with Christ that we have been received into Christ’s fellowship of our Father and the Spirit. Stephen D Morrison writes, Christ does not heal us as an ordinary doctor might, by standing over us, diagnosing our sickness, prescribing medicine for us to take and then going away, leaving us to get better as we follow His instructions. No, He becomes the patient. He assumes that very humanity which is in need of redemption, and by being anointed by the Spirit in our humanity, by a life of perfect obedience, by dying and rising again, for us, our humanity is healed in Him, in His person. We are not just healed through Christ, because of the work of Christ, but in and through Christ. Person and work must not be separated.”
