We can be marinated in life. Then again we can be preserved like a pickle in a belief system. A life in Christianity is different to a life in Jesus. There is real life in the latter. A semblance of life in the former. Theologians more astute that I have noted that the Gospel of the Kingdom is Jesus - not Christianity or religion. Our growth as a son of God begins when we agreed with what Gordon Moyes declared in a book, Discovering Jesus. He said, ‘Christianity is not a religion. It is a person.’

Christianity is a person when it’s not a religion. The Kingdom of God is Christ our life, meaning Christ come in our flesh, being and persona.

We can give a Bible based teaching and it might be what can be called ‘a solid sermon.’ But there may be no revelation in it because it is not spirit and life. There is no substitute for new covenant life. There is no life in the Spirit outside the new covenant and no new covenant that is not Christ our life.

Some of us are different to each other because we have different personalities. Others, despite these real differences are ‘different’ because we live in the old covenant instead of the new. Here is a difference that cannot be explained by individuality. This is the difference between life and death; spirit/life and flesh and between new covenant and old.

‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV.

We can speak words of spirit and life or merely fill a religious space with homilies and religious tid-bits. We impart life when Jesus is our life in spirit and in truth. Here there is a stream of spirit that comes from Father, through Jesus and Holy Spirit into us. An unconditional dedication to Jesus will always trump dedication to a belief system or a religious identity.

God is not generic and Christ is not a construct. Neither is a genuine union with God. Our union with God is a state of being in which we are one with God’s being. It’s much more than an attachment to a series of texts and propositions.

Jesus is God and the Son of Man and is active in our sphere. The word ‘Jesus’ helps our focus on His humanity and His incarnation in our being. He is the most personable person, heaven’s greatest hit and worthy of infinite honor among us. He is fully God and authentically human. We are one with God in His person.

If you have a philosophical bent, you may be interested to ponder that reality is a person - none other than the person of Jesus, the living word. Thus, being one with God, yourself and the creation comes by receiving Jesus as your life.

‘He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together’ Col 1.17 NLT.

Christ our life is the key to new covenant, new creation living. With Jesus our life we are joined to our Father and the wisdom, life and love of the universe. We are joined to spirit and life. Having trusted Jesus we are rooted in Father and grounded in all that is real, good and true. For this reason it is important that we as Believers receive the gospel of the Kingdom in its fullness, coming out of the shadows into the direct sunlight of the reality of Christ. Don’t be captured by the shadows of the real. The reality is Jesus!

‘For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality’ Col 2.17 NIV.
