Richard Rohr observes that, “Christians are usually sincere and well-intentioned people until you get to any real issues of ego, control power, money, pleasure, and security. Then they tend to be pretty much like everybody else. We often given a bogus version of the Gospel, some fast-food religion, without any deep transformation of the self; and the result has been the spiritual disaster of "Christian" countries that tend to be as consumer-oriented, proud, warlike, racist, class conscious, and addictive as everybody else-and often more so.” We might well ponder the idea that if we are crucifying the earth by those we vote into government, we are also crucifying Christ anew.

‘Darkness means the birth of illusions: false ideas about God, the world, and ourselves’. There is truth in the saying, ‘Seeing is believing.’ But there is also truth in the words, ‘Believing is seeing.’ The lens through which we look at life, study the Bible and know the meaning of the plan of salvation, the purpose of us and others determines whether we will perceive reality with understanding or distort reality like a lesser version of a Trump.

The lens with which to interpret the Bible correctly is the ‘Jesus Lens.’ The over-all hermeneutic of the Bible is the new covenant. The issue of salvation, present life and eternal life is our belonging in God. We belong. Do we live it or do we leave this treasure in the ground?

The adventure of life is to walk progressively into the light – unless we are too lazy or too contained in an imagined identity that trumps our identity in Christ.

I read today of politicians who sound off against wind-turbines as ‘ugly’ yet they are very much ok with kilometre wide holes in the ground, in the Hunter Valley that are, dirty, dusty and a blot on the environment. Why is a relatively benign and semi-elegant array of wind-turbines labelled ugly when the objectively ugly gets the tick of approval? In the un-hinged mind old is good and new is threatening. The emergence of the words ‘false facts’ fortifies the stupidity of populism and the inanity of unbridled ego. Separated from Christ, beauty and ugliness are what you want them to be. Darkness is light and light is darkness.

According to one of the Church Father’s denial of the incarnation is the Great Darkness.

When Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’ he wasn’t just talking about charities, care for the poor, healing eyes and limbs and filling churches. He meant healing the earth.

Jesus came as life and offered Himself as life for all to the full. But people object to unlimited life, especially when it limits theirs, limits their interests, interferes with the investments, prerogatives and sense of entitlement. It’s easier to whack the sexually immoral than bang ourselves on the head over our class selfishness and vandalism of the earth.

In the realm of ideas, of truth and the way to life without limit, we will either stick with our own ideas or embrace the ideas of God that come to us through Jesus Christ. Some fear educated people with their informed ideas because they might have to change their notions. People can find security in ignorance.

Some folks talk because they can. They have stopped listening, which means that they have stopped learning. Their ideas became fixed in their teens and they have continued in this state of arrested development – a dead tree - for the rest of their lives. Some are bigots. Some are passive resistors of life and light. Some if, they could would persuade Christ to embrace their darkness rather than give up their own darkness for His light.

Christ came for all but is received as He is and for our inheritance in Him by the open-minded and believing.

Christ came as our life in entirety. This is the truth, yet many make their own christs, develop their unique ways of getting to Christ and make a whole religion out of making themselves worthy of being received by Christ - when the truth is that we have already been received into His life. This is the light that is the gospel of the Kingdom. You can walk in this or spend your entire life pumping for warped gospels and deluded assumptions that came not from the revelation of God but from cunningly devised fables that are a variation of the lies that led to the fall.

“The imagery of light and darkness is used throughout the teachings of Jesus, clearest perhaps in the Gospel of John. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The incarnation of Jesus Christ is presented here as an act of light shining in the darkness. Sin is by nature darkness, and it is therefore an illusion-creating agent. In darkness we live unaware of that which is real and true. Darkness creates mythology. Darkness means the birth of illusions: false ideas about God, the world, and ourselves.” (1)

You can create religion of your own out of darkness or you can advance the Kingdom of God in the light of the genuine Christ and the Real Gospel.
