It’s about life. On the start page of his book, Repenting of Religion, Gregory Boyd posts this quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, ‘JESUS CALLS MEN,

NOT TO A NEW RELIGION BUT TO LIFE.’ This is why religion should not be permitted to become an end in itself. At best religion can be a path to God. At worst religion is a false god.

The Kingdom of God is God’s life as you. Paul called this ‘Christ our life’.

Christ is the alpha and omega of Himself. He draws you to Himself and established you in Himself. In Jesus you are in life itself. Not in an ideology or religion. You are in an incarnation.

The law given to Israel was destined to be replaced by God Himself. Firstly because law does not represent God, secondly because we cannot keep it and thirdly because law is anti-human and anti- God. This is why Christ come in the flesh is God in us and why the law come in the flesh is of the spirit of anti-christ.

Judgement comes from Satan who judged Father and then judged Adam and Eve is not enough and less than they were.

The tree of knowledge of good and evil grown in the nursery of estrangement from God is innately dualistic and as a result is fundamentally judgmental. It’s natural outflow is moralism. It is un-love.

Gregory Boyd continues, “Very rarely is a connection made between love on the one hand and judgment on the other. I argue that they are as inseparably

connected as up and down and good and evil. We love only insofar as we

abstain from judgment. Love is the central command in Scripture and judgment the central prohibition. Indeed, judgment is the “original sin” in Scripture. This is why the forbidden tree in the center of the garden—the prohibition around which life in the garden revolved—was called the “Tree of the Knowledge of

Good and Evil.”

God is three in one. Not dichotomised and not some version of a horizontally opposed engine. God is three persons, one God. The nature of the relationship that is God is the relationship with Godself that God in Christ has drawn us into. The nature of God is affirmation – a version of love.

‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit’ Romans 8.1-4 NIV.

We live according to the Spirit by agreeing with Christ that He is our life in every way.

The most deceptive judgment that plagues the legalist is the judgment of those who live from Christ their life without reference to the law. Spiritual blindness and a deep seated anti-life stance is the nature of the law-monger.

Judgement – a fruit of the law - is not only anti love. It is anti-God. The law does not describe the nature of God. The trinity is God’s nature. The law is not the key to a righteous life. Your inclusion in the communion of God is your healing and your righteousness. Christ makes you one with God and Christ makes you one with you. Your participation in the communion of God is key to your enjoyment of genuine communion with people – in marriage, family, church and work.

‘I in them and you in me--so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me’ John 17.23 NIV.
