‘I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?’ Gal 3.2 NIV.

Life in the Spirit is a function of oneness with God. Paul defined oneness with God as Christ our life. We cannot live or minister in the Spirit and be the Kingdom on any other basis. Those who are led by the Spirit are the sons of God. But they are spirit-led sons because they are rooted in our Father. Spirit-filled, Spirit led and spiritual gifts are entirely the fruit of the new covenant tree of reconciled persons in Christ. A Spirit-filled mode that remains tied to the law is a contradiction in terms as Paul explains in Galatians.

‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’ John 15.5 NIV.

All life proceeds from union with our Father. This is the ground of our new covenant state of being: We and Father are one. Our Spirit of Sonship is rooted in our oneness with Father, secured by divine enterprise. Here is the source of our advancing wholeness and maturity as the sons and the daughters of God. Here is the power for the regeneration of the world. This transformation is not secured assimilating ourselves to the law, to moralism is church culture. Transformation is ours because in Jesus our person has been engulfed in. the being of God. You are included.

‘Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is’ 1 John 3.2 KJV.

Our life in the Spirit and our use of spiritual gifts are rooted in this union. The fact that we are in Christ and that Christ is in God means that we are positioned in the trinity. We belong here as family. Meanwhile the incarnation means that this Family lives in us. The anointing, life in the Spirit and ministry in the Spirit are a function of our rootedness in Father - rootedness that has been restored because Christ is our life. This is our new covenant truth and new creation vitality.

It is unfortunately true that the new covenant has seldom been worked out and made manifest as the power that it is in the lives of Believers. People have settled for religion over incarnation and Christ’s stuff rather than His spirit-life. We have made shadows our life then the reality is Christ - His life manifest as you. Paul prayed that all might receive the revelation that would enable them to be the Kingdom of God.

‘I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way’ Eph 1.18-23 NIV.

Jesus is more than the means to life. He is life. Today the fullness of the God-head bodily dwells in you.

The fact is, that the new covenant is the resurrection of humanity from a life in Adam to a new creation in the person of the Son of Man. Jesus declared that He was life. Paul referred to Him as ‘Christ our life.’ John declared that He was ‘life and the light of humanity.’ All things have been made by Him in the old creation and the new. He has made us a new life. In the old covenant it was ‘Obey and live.’ In the new covenant it is “I have made you alive. Now you can obey.” Jesus not only made the creation. He made a new life that is entirely from God and for us. In this reality He is truly Father and we are truly daughters and sons. Sons not just in potential but in spirit and in truth. Fullness in Christ applies refers to being fully, uniquely and authentically ourselves in Christ; living to our design and being incarnated with the Spirit of Sonship. This is the soil from which the gifts grow and the glory of the sons of God.

‘Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made John’ 1.3 NIV.

Nothing of the Kingdom is made by anything that is not His person and life. This is why it is folly to hobble our life in our Father or amputate the tap-root of our new creation life by remaining in an old covenant mind-set, observing a Christianized view of the knowledge of good and evil, subsisting in legalism or living from a mixture of old and new covenant assumptions. This neutralizes the resurrection power of Jesus in the church and castrates what would have been the infinite potency of the trinity working through the church. The new covenant is not a doctrine so much as the person of Jesus incarnated as the life of the world. It is Christ our life and the life of heaven manifest in our world.

‘Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory’ Rom 5.2 NIV.
