The prize of the new testament age is union with God and fellowship with the trinity. In Jesus God has ‘made the two one’. This was Paul’s declaration in Ephesians and it is your inheritance in Christ.
Fundamentalists and people who have been brought up in the law – those who might define God as the law personified - the ones who say the Ten Commandments are God’s character. Or people who remain locked into the binary opposites of the knowledge of good and evil; those captured in old covenant belief while living in the age of the new covenant. These are the Believers who will find it hard to jump into the arms of non-dualistic oneness with God. But jump they must if they wish to enjoy the peace, understanding and delight that is theirs in the Kingdom of God.
Jumping into the arms of the non-dualistic realm is jumping into the open arms of Christ. Jesus called it being born again - without which we cannot even recognise the Kingdom of God.
UNION WITH GOD
What is non-dualism? Essentially this: Jesus said, ‘I and the Father are one.’ Embrace this because it is yours.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
Union with God means union with truth. But not as an abstraction but with a Person. It means the end of separation and union with all being.
Union with God not only means we are interwoven into the trinity. It means that we are one with the Source and Sustainer of all life. We have been made one with life. You can gain a faint oneness with nature as a ‘Green’. You become one with nature in God.
We are not talking pantheism. But we are talking life in the Spirit. C. S. Lewis was right when he painted a word picture of Aslan singing the creation into being. Probably something the Capitalist and the Globalisation-monger would find difficult to understand. The religious money-changer sells of life as religion. The capitalist sells off life as money.
We gain a harmonious relationship with creation when Christ is our life because the Logos, the Living Word has become our life.
ONE WITH LIFE
We no longer work against creation because we are not separate from it. Because we and Father are one we and the cosmos are one. Now we are joined with the logos that is declared in John’s gospel and made one with all that is described in Paul’s gospel where He states what many humans instinctively know: ‘That in God we live, move and have our being.’ Everything does. This tells us that Jesus’ work of loving includes His love of the earth and all of its people and all of its life. Thus through us Jesus lives to draw the entire creation into Himself.
‘For God SO LOVED THE WORLD that he gave his one and only Son’ John 3.16 NIV. The logos cited by John is the reason and purpose of the universe – not an abstraction but a person, yet more than reason and purpose. God’s creation and sustaining of this life is LOVE.
Unless we are living in God words like ‘discernment’ will be a construct but not part of our being. Law keepers do not have discernment. Well.. no more than a water melon has discernment.
THE CROSS IS FATHER OF THE TREES.
A little child shall lead them in more ways than one. Unless we view things as a little child we will not see the Kingdom of God. A little boy explained to his mother that he talked to trees, because they are living things. ‘They are alive,’ he said. He was not speaking nonsense. The created world has a ears and a voice. Certain trees are redolent with character and have a witness.
Anyone who has made Christ their life, and as a result is one with God and the creation will know what trees are saying. In the spirit, a tree has a different ‘word’ for every person. As a scientist, a musician, artist or just a person who loves life you can hear what various elements of the creation are saying. They speak ‘being’. With the discernment of the Spirit you will know what everything is saying.
DISCERNMENT, SPIRIT AND LIFE
The biosphere has its own version of spirit and life. The joy you experience as you contemplate an ancient Red Gum or the glory resonating within you from the aroma of landscape in ‘The murmur of the breezes and the river on its bars,
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,
And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars,’ is the result of your tuning into un-diluted love.
Love and life are synonymous.
In dualistic mode it is not possible to know fully, to love fully or to ‘be’ fully who we are: Sons. Only in Him do we unfold to become our true being – sons and daughters of God. Richard Rohr helps us understand what non-dualism is not.
Nondual thinking is not “relativism.”
It is not scepticism.
It is not merely saying “There are two sides to everything.”
It is not merely admitting that there are different perspectives in any situation.
It is not fuzzy thinking.
It is not a refusal to place your bet.
It is not an esoteric Eastern philosophy.
It is not postmodern nihilism.
It is not an avoidance of appropriate judgments. In fact, nondual thinking or contemplation is a sign that you have found the Absolute, but it is far beyond any words or ideas.(1)
MIND OF CHRIST
Non dualistic thinking is a state of being. It could be said to our possessing the mind of Christ. Yet it is not the possession of a belief system. It means we no longer live in the binaries of the law and the dichotomies of the knowledge of good and evil. It means we live in God. As such we share in His knowing and being which is as it should be for we are sons and daughters of God.
