We will not find the new covenant listed in the new testament. This is because it is a life and it is a relationship. It’s not a contract and it’s not a deal. It just is. The new covenant is the Relationship that is the trinity with us included in their oneness.
“You (and every other created thing) begin with your own divine DNA, an inner destiny as it were, an absolute core that knows the truth about you, a true believer tucked away in the cellar of your being, an imago Dei that begs to be allowed, to be fulfilled, and to show itself.” Fortunate are we if we learn the truth of this early in life and learn to live a Kingdom Life in which we become the person God made us to be, rather than a figure that is the composite of our own false expectation, the expectations of religion or the self-centred expectations of others. This is you as a king and a priest.
The Rich Young Ruler had a contract with God going which He did as a bunch of rules that bought (to his mind) God’s approval. Jesus invited him to abandon all that he thought was himself – abandon his sense of entitlement what was what Jesus meant – and follow Him. But that was too much. To his mind he could do some law and keep most of what he valued about himself for himself. So what did this man lose. Not just eternal life. He lost his real self.
FALSE SELF TO TRUE SELF
You are never your real self in the law. Never born again in the law and never a son and representative of the Kingdom of God in the law. Sure, we may gain eternal life but in this life we will never be our real selves and never really advertise the spirit and life that is the Kingdom of Heaven. We can do some of the gifts in the law but will never overflow with spirit and life.
There’s nothing contractual about your post cross inheritance. It’s not a transaction. It’s Christ as you; the trinity expressed through you. Because ‘the two have been made one you have a non-dualistic life.
SIGNS OF NEW COVENANT
There are scriptures that indicate the nature of the new covenant however. Such as
“Through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” Gal 2.19-21 NIV.
Paul is saying that He has died to religion in Jesus Christ and now rises to live in the life and light of the world: A person and His God. Paul is quite blunt in his description of religion and law based performance living as crap.
And again, “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory” Col 3.3,4 NIV.
This life begins when you choose Jesus over religion. Your glory unfolds as Jesus unfolds in you and your real Kingship is celebrated every day and when you are revealed with Him in the glory of the Second Coming.
Stephen Crosby writes, ‘In the old covenant and much [contemporary] preaching - human, obedience was and is the condition to receive Father's blessing. In the new covenant obedience is the fruit of being blessed. In the old covenant obedience was the root of anticipated hope. In the new covenant, it is the fruit of realized hope. In the new covenant, God rewards the faith filled seeker - someone who maintains relationship to Himself (in strength and weakness, success and failure) - not the person who most perfectly obeys His principles.’ (1)
Whether they will admit it or not many Christians live out a kind of contract – an ongoing routine in which they abide in their own definition of a godly life. Their version of good deeds as a quid pro quo - if not for present blessing then for eternal life. Not a few, who are by no means prosperity gospel addicts experience severe disappointment when either they or their wives get a disease like cancer after a long life of service and obedience.
GIFT OF GOD
What we get is not a reward so much as a life. This is a life that transcends the one we are living in. We are graced with Christ’s life as ours – incarnated with Jesus and the trinity so that we are filled with God’s spirit and life and more. We become a manifestation of God as the sons of God. We have a sense of freedom and well-being and a great satisfaction in being us that comes from our flourishing in the person of Jesus. People who live in bits of religion do not have this. Since they do not have inner contentment - they are dissatisfied with themselves and often pester others to be some version of what they are not in religion. They can spend much of their lives attempting to het others to do what Jesus means them to be doing all along.
“[In the new covenant] we obey because obedience is consistent with our new nature, because it is right, and because the new creation is inherently empowered from within to do so. Our obedience is not conditioned on the prospect of temporal reward. If it were so, what happens to our obedience when blessing and reward is slow in coming or does not arrive at all? The world is full of obedient believers who do not experience health, wealth, and ease. Our obedience could cost us our life, family, finances, and reputation.” (2) Whatever the case, what we have prior to any action of our own is union with God. This is our life and this is the spirit that ignites our being and expresses itself as our Kingdom Fruit.
A PASSABLE PRESENTATION
You can minster bits and pieces of religion from a position under the tree of the knowledge of good and evil – find an article for Monday, get up a theme for the conference; slice of a portion of good and evil cloth to wave about for the sermon. Kingdom life is not information and it is more than the gifts added to a law frame-work. It’s the life of God expressed in you as it was in Jesus. Since the cross, you and Father are one as Jesus was one with His Father in ministry. This is new covenant irrigation of the sons of God with spirit and life. You can minister from new covenant spirit and life in oneness with Jesus because you are spirit and life.
It’s not difficult to minister a gospel for tares. It’s much simpler to minister sonship in oneness with God.
