You might be surprised at how many Believers live in the pre-cross, old covenant mode of Adam and Moses. This is most certainly the mindset of moralists and the mindset of much of standard Christian thinking. Jesus undoes all kinds of degradation. He makes us whole and holy. But it He who is our life and not standards, moralities and ethics.

‘Christ our life’ makes us whole, human and Godly in the best way. Christ our life is the Kingdom of God in us and God’s living way of imparting this Kingdom to everyday life.

An astute pastor said recently, ‘We discovered that we had inadvertency been living in the old covenant as if this was God’s will.’ How wrong can we be?

The new covenant is not ‘I love Jesus so much because of the cross I would not do anything to offend Him.’ The fact is you would.

Neither is the new covenant the law with Jesus help. Our post cross life is not a modified pre-cross life. You have a life in the New Adam. Not a life in the old Adam with crutches.

The new covenant is not God’s endorsement of Moses by Jesus. The new covenant is the new and living way in which Christ’s incarnation in you becomes Christ expressed as you.

The new covenant is not a doctrine or an artifact of the letter. It’s a state of being that is union with God.

The new and living way of Christ our life.

Jesus loves you as you are. Not as you should be. That’s one part of the new covenant. There’s more. Since Christ is your life, the new covenant is as simple as Jesus manifesting as you. This is life in the Spirit. Life in the Spirit is not the gifts applied to people living in an old covenant mindset. It’s not an old truck with a new paint job. Spirit and law are incompatible. The new covenant is union with God. The old covenant is separation from God.

The new covenant applies to all. But not all live in it. What we believe is the reality we create for ourselves, even though Jesus has given us a superior reality – His life as ours. Thus Jesus declares Himself the way, the truth and the life – because He is.

Many believers live old covenant because they know no better. They do not know that the Bible is not a moral compendium or a Try Harder Treatise. Other Believers live old covenant because - if they did not their denomination and its beliefs would dissolve into nothing. They would be left hanging isolated with no identity and no self-built status.

The new covenant is the good news of limitless grace – grace that is not an abstraction but grace that is Father, Son and Holy Spirit in you and for you and manifesting as you: As a son/daughter of God.

“The life of Jesus Christ is “at once manward and Godward.” Jesus Christ acts both as God and as man, mediating God to man, and therefore, also mediating man to God, acting in the place of all mankind. Jesus Christ is God to man, man to God. It is in and through Jesus Christ the God-man that God has established union with mankind. God completed the covenant in Jesus Christ. He is the union of God and man, the place where we meet Divinity and where Divinity lays hold of our humanity. He upholds both ends of the covenant in Himself as both God of God to man, and man of man to God.” (1)

‘What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?’ ROM 7.24 NIV.

This is what it means to belong. It’s the full meaning of belonging in the Body of Christ – a belonging that contrasts with the kind of ‘belonging’ that is really a belonging in the body of death. You can of course live in this Body of Life which is the person of Jesus in you and as you. As Paul wrote, ‘But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.’ This physical body lives in you by the Spirit. It’s more than rites and morality. It’s infinite spirit and life manifesting in your body, your persona and as the Real You.

‘Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!’ Rom 7.25 NIV.
