‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’ John 17.3 NIV.
Knowing God as God is – is life. Conversely not knowing God or being burdened with a distorted view of God limits our life. Despite what is currently fashionable to believe in some circles, being able is better than being disabled, wellness is better than illness and ease is better than disease. Truth is better than living in one’s own illusions because we choose to.
Knowing God is life now and eternally. To know God is to know truth, to know oneself and to possess a lens of insight into the world – the kind of ‘seeing’ that we call spiritual discernment is not limited to religious things. Wisdom has a universal application and can be possessed by all who are humble enough to enquire and listen.
To see beyond the compartments of good and evil is to see in God. This is why Christ is our life and not a religion.
A REAL CHRIST
Being a ‘realist’ has merit so long as it does not mean - as it can do - being a cynic and a reductionist with a pinched view of life. There is nothing more important for well-being than enjoying a real Christ, a real God and real gospel of the Kingdom. God’s reality is life and we become more fully alive the more we live directly in Him. The futility of believing something because you want to is being worked out right now in the United States.
‘Oneness’ with God, will not make you a pious freak. It makes us fully human and fully alive.
In the paddock of tares with The Father of Lies ‘reality’ is false facts and false life. But there’s no advantage in having a false christ when you can have the real Christ. Thomas Torrance urges that, “Both natural and theological sciences are supremely interested in developing a mind appropriate to reality. A natural scientist must learn to think in accordance with the aspect of nature they are working to discover, and the theologian must learn to think in accordance with God’s self-revelation, Jesus Christ.” (1)
The Bible must be read in accordance with God’s self-revelation in Jesus Christ or our rendering of it is not the truth.
‘Appropriate to reality’. God is revealed in Jesus Christ. In Him is the fullness of the God-head bodily. The I AM of God is revealed in the I AM of His son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the I AM of Himself, not an expression of the law, not subordinate to the law and in no way defined by the law. Thus to know God is to know Jesus Christ.*
INCARNATION IS LIFE
Torrance observes, “We are united to Christ who is bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, and participate in the risen Humanity of Christ so that we are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh.” This is incarnation, the mediation of Christ into our flesh, the Lord’s Table realised in everyday life and the difference between an ordinary life and life as son/daughter of God in spirit and in truth.
* A christ who is an expression of the law and subordinate to the law is a false christ.
