BLIGHTS OF OFFENCE
The life journey of Jesus, the cross, the atonement and resurrection of Jesus – all of this resulted in the undoing of Adam and the re-doing of us in Christ. All of this is the at-one-ment proper. Christ’s life atones for our wrong life and becomes our Christ life. Christ is not only all and in all as the cosmic Christ. Christ is our life in relation to God and the realisation of our real self. The mediation of Christ is Jesus as us vis a vis God and the true self. This is to say that Jesus is the True Church, the New Creation and the Kingdom of God – manifest in us.
TOGETHERNESS IN CHRIST
The oneness that is the trinity as three persons one God, has reached out in Jesus. This oneness and belonging has drawn us in Jesus into communion with the Communion that is God.
SO SIMPLE BECAUSE SO TRUE
The achievement of our oneness with God is a marvel compared to the pedantic legalised avenue of jumping through hoops. Thomas Torrance writes, “Both Liberals and Fundamentalists, however, react with a kind of shock when the humanity of Jesus and substitution are linked together for they have not a little difficulty with the idea that it is as man that Jesus Christ takes our place, acts on our behalf and in our stead, and that it is precisely as man that God himself comes to us in the Incarnation. It is at this very point that the Gospel seems to hurt most, for it cuts like a two-edged sword into our preconceived ideas.” (1)
BLIGHTS OF OFFENCE
If the cross is an offence to the religious mind the incarnation is an offence to the law-steeped mind. Because Jesus Christ is a man he blends by the Spirit into our being to manifest as Jill and Mark. Jesus mediates to us His relationship to Father and is our relationship to Father. As Christ our life Jesus mediates all of His life to us. Our life in Christ is a rest and not a work. Jesus is our Sabbath rest because in Him we have a Sabbath Life. No longer are we attempting to conjure up faith. But we are intentionally resting in His Faith while being alert to ensure that our faith is identical to His Gospel and His Mind.
FAITH IS NOT WORKS AND REAL FAITH IS NOT DEAD
Faith as religion and a work of compliance may be sought as the attempt to work up “Faith or belief as an autonomous, independent act which we do from a base in ourselves.. The biblical conception of faith is rather different. Faith has to do with the reciprocity, and indeed the community of reciprocity, between God and man, that is, with the polarity between the faithfulness of God and the answering faithfulness of man. Within the covenant relationship of steadfast love and truth, the covenant faithfulness of God surrounds and upholds the faltering response of his people.” (2) Once again this faith is not as an assent to words and proof texts but faith as a state of being in which Christ in us joins with our spirit to ground itself in oneness with Christ rather than in ‘earning Christ’ which is a common but subtle ‘work.’
