As a young Believer I had heard of ‘The Full Gospel Church.’ John Wimber recognised the need for the full gospel when he asked shortly after his conversion to Christianity, ‘When do we get to do the stuff?’ He was talking about healing the sick, raising the dead and casting our demons. This is as much part of the Kingdom of God ministered by us as is baptism. The full gospel simply means doing all that Jesus did: Forgiving sins in His name and healing the sick in His name and authority. Healing of our diseases is just as much part of His continuing ministry through us as the church as is the perpetual incarnation of the trinity in body, soul and spirit. Healing is a sign of the Kingdom. It signifies that what Jesus is doing for our bodies He is desiring to do to our entire being and to the whole – the healing of the self and the creation.
THE GREATER FULLNESS
However, healing, signs and gifts of the Spirit on their own can never be the full gospel because, on their own, they neglect the critical matter of the Spirit of Sonship that grows from our ‘Jesus accomplished’ union with God.
Union with God is the key accomplishment of the cross and the main effect of the vicarious humanity of Jesus. The effect – and this is mega grace - is that we are who He is.
‘Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world’ 1 John 4.17 KJV.
A gifts ministry can take place although we may be living in ignorance of the new covenant or living only partially in its provisions. The latter is called ‘living in mixture.’ Here we live in an old and new covenant mindset. But in separation attempting by pieties and disciplines to achieve the union with God that we already have. Yes, futile as this sounds it is the norm in many Christian communities. Not only do many Christians live an entirely bland and powerless shadow of the Kingdom but they live in a degree of separation from God that does not belong to the new testament age. Why? Because so many have agreed with cunningly devised dualism that we are separated from God.
NO SPLIT REALITY
There is no sacred and secular in the Kingdom Age. He has made the two one. God is not found in special holy places or sacred times today as in the pre-cross era. He is in you and in us. Just as the Son was incarnated in Jesus of Nazareth so Jesus the Christ is incarnated in Bill Jones of Narromine and Syd Jenkins of Dubbo – as well as all who take the name of Jesus.
OUR JUDGE AND OUR LIFE
The excellent nature of our life in Christ is that HE IS OUR LIFE. Jesus is in us and with us. He is both our judge and our life. But not a judge in the familiar sense of condemnation of self and others. His witness to us in our hearts reveals His glory, our unlikeness to Him and at the same time THE REALITY OF OUR TRUE SELF IN HIM. From His witness in our hearts we see our potential to take on His glory and beauty of being. He is our life in the sense that it is HE WHO BECOMES US. His beautiful Spirit suffuses our being and He manifests as Jill and George and Dave of Cooranbong and Wyong.
We need not ‘earn’ Jesus as our life. Intimacy with the Lords is what you have. Not what you have worked up. By agreeing that Jesus is our life, we give Him permission to be our life. This is Christ our life in spirit and in truth. No, we do not have deity. But we are sons of God. All can live as sons rather than mere products of the Christian Industry.
This scripture is perhaps the least known and least recognised for its significance in the Bible. Yet it is the core and prime reality of our inheritance as sons of His Kingdom. ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14,20. If you have not realised this yet then realise it today!
TRINITY IN YOU
‘Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them’ John 14.23 NIV. The trinity lives in you to inform you of the truth of God, to encourage you, to nurture you in your sonship and to witness to themselves.
FULL NOT HALF
The full gospel arises from the incarnation – from you in Christ and Christ in us. The kingdom of God and the full gospel is the effect of Christ in us all. Now signs and healings are the manifestation of His presence in us, of life without limit and our authority as sons of God who reign over all forms of death. Not happening that hang in the air without connection to the Whole. Supernatural works are no more life-giving that natural works. (They are however a sign of renewal and restoration) What counts is us is the new creation – continually renewed because we are joined to the Person who is resurrection and life.
‘I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death’ Phil 3.10 NIV.
The full gospel is the fullness of Christ. It is the fullness of who He is for us, the fullness of what He has done for us and the fullness of who we now are as the sons and daughters of God. This involves all that Jesus did among us and all that we are – the who of who we are rooted by Jesus in the fellowship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The full gospel is the fullness of Christ manifest in each and as the church. Such a church is not just any church stumbling along in replication of itself. It containes the agents of the new creation and is the advancing new creation. It’s the Rock that covers the entire earth with His glory.
