BETTER THAN SOMETHING AND NOTHING

Should we have made a life from externalities, these banalities will be our life. If we have made a life from routines and behaviours, they will be what we might call our ‘Christian life’. Should ‘church’ and its culture absorb our attention we might think that this is our life with God.

But our life with God is our life in God. A life in God is personal, a state of being and the reality that is Christ.

Once we have learned to live in the oneness with Christ that is ours, we are not dependent on forms of religion.

Religion, like anything else can be incarnated with God. But religion itself is not God and is incapable of imparting the spirit and life of God that makes us alive in the spirit of sonship.

Growing up into Christ is mainly about learning that Christ is Himself, that He is in us and with us and actually part of our being. ‘Religion’ can be about the effort to receive and retain Christ. But the Kingdom He began is less about us receiving Christ and more about us agreeing with Him that we have already been received into Christ’s life.

This union and this fellowship has little to do with a set of behaviours and institutional participation. Of course it does produce behaviours that are gracious and life-giving. But the state of being alive and being a life-giver comes from our union with God. You are not in separation. You are in union. Just live from where He has put you!

‘I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could

be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!’ Gal 2.21 NIV.

A genuine life with God comes from our BEING WOVEN INTO THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE TRINITY. This is synonymous with being woven into life. Little wonder that some struggle with a severe lack of spiritual discernment when they have never really come to terms with seeing life as life is – because they are still outside it. You are not in life if you are in the law. You are in Adam and in separation. As Paul said, ‘The cross has not helped you.’ If this is you, you need to ‘get with the life’.

REALISING

There’s a lot in REALISING. Realising is seeing reality.

Thus Jesus says, ‘On that day YOU WILL REALIZE that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV. Should we have realised this we will have a real relationship with God – union with God in spirit and truth. This is an interwoveness of being that goes beyond the notion of the letter that deceives so that we know God as God is and ourselves as we are and as we are becoming.

This kind of ‘knowing’ is the result of a relationship with Reality. Here we are liberated from the confusions, relativisms and lies of the knowledge of good and evil to become immersed the adventure of a life lived in spirit and in truth. We are baptised into life!

LIGHT THAT REVEALS TRUTH

‘In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind’ John 1.4 NIV.

This union with God; this situation and positioning of our being WHERE IT BELONGS in sonship with God is the engine of the Kingdom. It is the key to spiritual discernment and the ability define life and to love ourselves and love others as our selves.

So we have entered a condition were we are one with life and we know life. We can separate it from death and every shadow of the real. Here you are free. You are not contained in the routines of externality. Others remain tied to artifice because that’s all they have. Take away these husks of conformity and they have nothing. Even though they have made an entire life from these shadows of the real they are joined to a fantasy. Why make a thing out of a Sabbath Day when you have a Sabbath life of rest and fruitfulness?

THE SUBSTANCE OF NOTHINGNESS

Should you have entered this state of liberty and wholeness (born again) some of your friends will reproach you. They regard themselves as grounded in certainties. They are contained in supposed religious solidities when what they actually have is drops of life instead of rivers of living water. They have a phantom of themselves instead of the substance of genuine sonship. It’s possible to give talks on topics like ‘sonship’ and expound on their merits. Yet remain a ghost of our real selves and a shadow of a real son.

Richard Rohr, an apostle of the ‘True Self’ and the Living Way writes, “Only your soul can know the soul of other things. Only a part can recognize the whole from which it came. But first something within you, your True Self, must be awakened. Those who have not made contact with their own souls will think you are talking gibberish and silliness when you talk about spiritual things (1 Corinthians 2:10–16), and they are just being honest with their limited experience.

Conversely, many religious people will defend their own lack of any God experience by calling you a “heretic” or wrong, because you are speaking beyond their limited experience. They are sincere, too, although often not very humble or very kind (I get my cruellest letters from religious people). This is exactly why Jesus said, “All will hate you because of me” (Luke 21:17), and even, “Blessed are you when they hate you” (Luke 6:22). He wanted us to be prepared for this common surprise.” (1)

Ever wondered why when Life Himself came among us that we killed Him? Yet Jesus used this atrocity to undo death and humbug from within. You have been received into HIS LIFE. He is your life. Life is a person. Multiply Jesus and you will be doing what you were born to do.
