I read this scripture in my youth as a college student. I did not realise then the depth of being and ultra-life that was in this statement and the reality to which it referred. “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John. 17:3).
Baxter Kruger observes that, “
In Jesus Christ, the Father’s eternal Son himself has come to be with fallen Israel, and in Israel with the human race in its alienation from God. In him the rich and abounding and beautiful life of the triune God has intersected the broken, sinful, and shame-riddled existence of fallen humanity. Through his incarnate life, death, resurrection, and ascension, the covenant between God and Israel has been filled with nothing less than the Son’s own relationship with his Father, and his own anointing in the Holy Spirit, and his own relationship with humanity, and with all creation.” (1)
I have not always like God. I liked Jesus more. In later life I found that to see Jesus is to see our Father. Good theology tells me that there is no ‘hidden god’ lurking behind the figure of Jesus Christ. What you see in Jesus is what you get in Father.
The good news is much better than many of us realise. This is because Father is far better than we have believed and have been socialised into believing. For starters the gospel is not a clever means of keeping the law. This is because the law is not what life is about. Union with God is what life is about and Jesus is the means to this union. As Jesus said,
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. Realising this enables us to know Christ as He is, love God and be who we truly are and advance the Kingdom in the ministry of ourselves. The major fruitfulness in life does not always come from following some church mission programme. Fruitfulness is being yourself in Christ’s spirit and life. Church ‘mission’ is not something distinct from you as a person. Drop that kind of dualism. Mission is your impartation of the life that is yours as one of the many faces of Jesus. As the genuine Body of Christ we become the face of Jesus to those near us and to those who do not believe.
J Baxter Kruger observes that the gospel is not that we can receive Jesus into our lives. It is that we have been received into His. That is, we have been
received already. We are already in Him and in fellowship with each member of the trinity. As well as that, the fullness of the God-head bodily lives in us just as was the case with Jesus. Thus ‘knowing God’ has the same connotation as knowing one’s spouse – which is why the church is not only the Body. It is the Bride of Christ who lives in oneness with the Groom.
God is never somewhere else because He is in you.
This is a most pertinent fact - the fact that you are already received into Jesus’ life. It is of vital importance. Vital because there need be no impediment between ourselves and our Saviour – our only saviour as it happens.
There are many folks who love Jesus, but they seldom experience the union with Him that is their possession and treasure. They are busy in some way trying to earn it or attempting to deserve it. It’s a mistake to obsess about overcoming sin as a prelude to having a relationship with Christ. Obsess over the fact that you are one with Christ because of Christ. You will live a more rounded, joyful life and will overcome. Maybe not everything but that’s not the point. The point is that you belong and you are included because of Christ. Not because of you.
This is why Jesus is our saviour. He is the stand-in for us. He represents us and He is our life. Here’s the thing. Jesus is in you. He believes in Himself, who He is and what He has done for you. Jesus believes in you! That’s the big deal. Your role is rest in the fact that He is your life and that He represents you to infinitely.
‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist’ 2 John 1.7 NIV.
Jesus’ believing is your believing and what Jesus believes about Himself and you is your truth. It is what counts. This does not mean it is ok to believe anything. It means we need to align ourselves with what Jesus believes, which is why Baxter Kruger
wrote his book and why I am writing this right now. Truth sets us free to be alive in the fullness of God’s truth and His life and in the fullness of ours.
Don’t drink from a glass one third full when your inheritance is an overflowing glass.
Don’t spend your life defending an inferior identity and an un-gospel that leaves people in sepsis instead of spirit and life.
Incarnation: We have this treasure today and every day in jars of clay. Our glory is that we share in the life of Jesus and our Father. This is the reason for salvation history and the core of redeemed life. Our glory is that Father is our real and worthy Father and that we are sons and daughters of God, unique and with heaven imbued agency - because Christ is our life.
Those who embrace Him, who believe in His name, find His Light, His I AM setting them free to become their true selves, free to live as children of God in the darkness, discovering their origin beyond their earthly parents in the Word in God. And so the Word became flesh and entered the darkness in person, and found His way within us. And we perceived His true identity, His glory as the only begotten out of the Father, an overflowing fountain of grace and truth.”
