ALWAYS ENOUGH IN CHRIST
Jesus assured us that He would be in us and with us and on account of that we would never be orphans. To put this another way, you will never be separated from God – because Adam’s separation finished at the cross and Christ’s union with the trinity in your stead began at the resurrection.
The anointing, the gifts and the charismata are not your life. Christ is your life because He is your union with God. The gifts function properly when we are alive in the incarnation.
While Jesus alone is life, His life flows through those for whom He is life. There are degrees of fruitfulness and these depend on living in Him instead of living in externalities. An externality is anything that is not Christ.
CHRIST COME IN YOU
Incarnated in us, the life of God flows out through us into our relationships. A church in which most people live Christ as their life will be a church that emanates His life to each other and to the world. Such churches are not religious, ideological or legalistically wooden communities. Neither are they nominal. They consist of life-giving people because Life Himself lives in them.
“The whole New Testament—all the Christian Scriptures together—maintains a beautiful balance between immanence and transcendence. God is totally beyond us, yet in Jesus God is also among us and within us—a creative tension that needs to be maintained both in experience and in theology.” (1)
CHRISTIANITY IS A PERSON
Jesus’ message was and is that He IS LIFE. Not that a moral program is life. A christianity that is essentially behavior modification is not the inheritance Jesus has given us. Well-meaning Christians who berate homosexuals are not speaking for Christ. But they do represent a Christian version of the knowledge of good and evil. Jesus presented Himself as the solution to every kind of degradation and sin. He receives us as we are. Not as we should be. In His company we do become more loving, gracious and pure. But this is the result of Christ our life. Not a series of hoops to jump through.
‘Keeping close to Jesus’ may be what we have learned is ‘Christian’ but it’s not you inheritance and not the Kingdom Jesus lefts us. Christ come in our flesh is this Kingdom. It’s the seed of the new creation.
CHRISTIANITY AS THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL IS TOXIC
There are church cultures that are not exactly godless but which convey a warped view of God evidenced in unkindness, criticism, judgment and carelessness with the truth. Working in such an institution is a trial and a challenge. One should not feel constrained to stay in a culture of religious cannibalism. Life comes to us all when we eat Christ. This is the Lord’s Table as a way of life – Christ come in our flesh. This is the living way and the only way that puts all things under Christ’s feet. It’s the ‘way’ by which Christ becomes us.
