Christ is not a Christ of the law. He is the Christ of the I AM and the triune God. We make good progress as Christians when we move from a notional christ to the Christ who becomes our life. Religion is the shadow. The reality is the Christ of God made manifest in our spirit and realized in our flesh (bodies) and then in the world.

‘This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God’ 1 John 4.2 NIV.

The Christ who has come in our flesh (our spirit, soul and body) is the Christ of God.

‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly’ John 10.10 NIV. We would do well to examine whether our gospel is the theft of life or the multiplication of it.

If we have come to believe that Christ came to make us good people, we are pretty much mistaken. He came to give us life. This life became ours because He drew us into Himself and the Company of God. Fruits of the Spirit are the result of His life as our life. Not a pre-condition of acceptance with God. The main aim of Christ towards you was the securing of your belonging.

It is not sufficient to advance the kingdom by being an adherent of christianity as religion. But it is is simply and effectively done when we are the expression of Christ. Just as Jesus was the complete expression of our Father, so we are graced to be the expression of Jesus. Each of us are an aspect of Him and all of us reveal His fullness. Therefore, it is important to live from our design rather than from some template others might make for us.

A house church aficionado once attempted to impose a framework on our group. Seemingly unaware of the new covenant and the new and living way of Christ our life in all things, he imagined that there were ‘must do’ things that qualify a community for the approval of God. But there is no such thing - other than the embrace of the living Jesus alive in ourselves and each other. When we have chosen a personal Jesus for ourselves, we are equipped to see Him in others and hear His voice speaking to us personally and to our fellowship.

There is no template of life other than the triune God. Life was in them and they chose to share it with us. They have never resiled from this plan and are resolved on its accomplishment. Resolved out of deep love and for the joy of our company. Father loves humanity. He does not just tolerate it. He is determined to draw all into Himself by the uplifting of His Son.

We have been placed in the fellowship of God. In Him we are free to make our own arrangements for fellowshipping with Him and each other. Just as creation originally sprang from His being, so the new creation does the same - but with resurrected glory and a new vitality that drives out all that is not alive to replace it with everlasting life.

Years ago I was reading a Manning Clark biography. Clark, a noted Australian historian was appalled at the anti-life stance of his mother’s religion. He noted how she sang passionately of the life of God, yet denied this exhilarated life in the world of everyday affairs. Why? Because religion rather than the person of Jesus was her default god. With Jesus we are always in touch with hope and life - whether in the abyss of some disaster or the joy of skiing a slope at Mt Hutt in New Zealand. This is because Christ is our life. He is the mediator of the life that is the three-personed God and the representative of all that is restoration, joy and infinite life. There is a way of sucking the marrow out of life that is prescribed by God. It is to eat His Son!

‘Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me’ John 6.57 NIV.

Being the expression of Jesus is not some onerous attempt to do the fruits of the Spirit. When Christ is our life we are the branches of the vine and the fruit of the tree of life. This is the natural result of life in the Spirit of Christ, also known as the spirit of Sonship. Jesus is the new and living way of being alive, of being perceptive because the light lives in us, of being fruitful and multiplying sons and daughters for God.

Living in life we impart life to our topic, our projects and our loved ones. We are graced to impart life to those we do not like and who abuse us. Because Christ is in us and manifests through us. When Jesus came among us He was life itself. With Him as your life so are you!
