We can talk to Jesus. But we need not see this as a ‘work’. We can just ‘be.’ Because God is in us and with us prayer is a state of being. It’s a quality of the incarnation. Just as good friends can commune in saying nothing, we can do the same with God because we and Father are one.
IN YOU AND WITH YOU
An interaction between our soul and His spirit will occur when we are still and know that God is God; that we are us and that Christ has come in our flesh. Of course God is in us when we are not still and engaged in the hectic business of life. There is no place where God is not, no time when He is more present than any other time. When Jesus said, ‘I am with you always’ He meant what He said. You can talk to Jesus like you would a friend or you can just ‘be’ as befits the circumstance.
Jesus did not promise us prosperity or freedom from trouble. What He did assure us of was that He would participate with us in all of our life. This does not mean that He does not heal or bless today. But our life in Jesus is much more than having access to an Automatic Teller.
THE I AM OF GOD
God is not a belief system or a religion. He is the most ‘Person’ of all beings and He relates to us personally by living in us and pervading our spirit, soul and body. We are not separated from God in this post cross age – not unless we have constructed our personal insulations by continuing in the law beyond the time.
We are not one with God because of things we do. We are one with God because He has made us one with Himself through the cross and the indwelling Holy Spirit. You are just as much one with God before participating in the Lord’s Table as after it. This Table is the sign and remembrance of what is – not what you are making happen by engaging in a rite. Because you are one the things you do will be life-giving and charged with His spirit and life.
SPIRIT GIVES US FREEDOM TO BE
Prayer is not a religious rite or a pious ‘must do.’ It is the result of your inion with God that already is. Thus it is a state of being and a way of life. Of course we can chatter to God because Jesus is real, in us and with us. You can share yourself with God as you would a good friend. Primarily prayer is one of the means of accessing living water. But we are not Godly because we pray a lot. We are Godly because we live in the oneness with Himself that He has given us.
“Prayer is an invitation to come home, to be loved, nurtured, and refreshed. Nouwen puts it this way: "Praying... demands a relationship in which you allow the other to speak there, allow him to touch the sensitive core of your being, and allow him to see so much that you would rather leave in darkness."' Prayer is thus the call to intimacy with the God of the universe, who is our Father in Jesus Christ. Prayer is listening to what He would whisper to us. Prayer is being renewed by His loving presence. Prayer is being exposed, embraced, and healed by Him who alone knows what is best for us.” (1)
WORSHIP IS A LIFE
Jesus will whisper to you as you hang the clothes out on the line or shout out to you in the midst of the fray. Hearing Him is aided by believing that He is with us always and at all times and never somewhere else.
The law is not a mediator of godliness in this age. Jesus is - and with Him, our Father and Holy Spirit. Christ in you is our Godliness and the drawing us into increasing likeness to the Family from which we originated.
‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him’ Matt 11.27 NIV.
This kn0wing becomes your knowing when Christ rather than externalities are our life. In the old testament God’s people were warned against idolatry. This warning is more relevant in the new testament age, given the fact that our inheritance is more glorious and accessible. In this age idolatry is seeking life in anyone or anything that is not Christ. Such idols smother our passage from glory to glory.
