Yesterday someone in our house was looking for their phone. They looked high and low but it eluded capture. Then from my study I rang their number on my phone and lo and behold – the lost phone revealed itself by ringing from inside a book the person had been reading. Almost an example of ‘You are twice mine little phone.’ Michael Kepler writes of our first parents being tricked into seeking what they already had.
“It wasn’t a piece of good-looking fruit that lured Adam and Eve; the real target with the temptation was to challenge their identity. Essentially, the serpent said, “Do this,” and then they would become like the Most High. They lost sight of the truth that they were already like God, created in his image.” (1)
You might be surprised that even today people feel they must add something to Christ to make themselves special. Life does not come from Biblical datums. It comes from Christ in you. We can be sincere, work hard and preach a gospel that is not a gospel – because we have been deluded by cunningly designed fables. Paul spoke of laying a foundation. This foundation was the Gospel of the Kingdom built around the Christ of God. If we have embraced a whacky gospel we will have made a crooked christ. Paul writes,
“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames” 1 COR 3.10-15 NIV.
Today the Enemy is employing the same ruse. The damage of the fall has been undone. The separation caused by distrusting God and going it alone has been extinguished. Humans and God are one. We enter this union by believing it. Yet large sections of the church live in ignorance of what the cross achieved: Union with God. And living in this ignorance they perpetuate the fall – the separated mindset. They make a big effort to commend themselves to God, to have more of His presence. But He is already in us and with us. Holy Spirit and the gifts only utilise the resource of union that is already ours.
THE GOSPEL IS
Baxter Kruger writes, ‘The gospel is not the news that we can receive Jesus Christ into our lives; the gospel is the news that Jesus Christ has received us into his life. And the us he has received into his life is not the Sunday version of us, but the blind and obstinate, the faithless and fearful and terrified us.’
THE REALITY IS CHRIST
E'yen Gardner writes, “Oneness with God is not a dream, it is the only reality. Everything else is an illusion.”
Jesus urged, ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV. Many Believer have not so ‘realized’ and because of this they give themselves over to pursuits designed to acquire what they already have: Union with God. You have what you believe you have. Live from your pearl and you will be born again into a new life of fellowship with Jesus, our Father and Holy Spirit. (1) Kapler, Michael C..
