Deep faith is more than a set of beliefs. It’s a state of being. This is indicated by Paul’s observation in Acts, ‘In Him we live and move and have our being’. Religions of note acknowledge this, as does the Kingdom of Jesus Christ in which one lives in union with God rather than in union with religion. Here we are talking incarnation which is a totally different state of being to that depicted by the Valley of Dry Bones.
Life in the Spirit is never the gifts bolted onto dry bones. Life in the Spirit is the effect of our believing and living the our union with God that is already ours.
YOUR UNION WITH GOD
The best novels and movies acknowledge this too and are based on it. The movie Storm Boy 2019 is as much about nature and our living as part of the Fabric of Life, as it is about a Pelican and a boy. No pantheism here. Christianity lived as a state of being rather than as a belief system unites us directly to Christ, the logos, which is the meaning and purpose of the universe. Paul called this the law of the spirit of life which is a ‘who’ and all that an existence in the letter that kills is not. We can be positioned in the Body of Christ as a corps or a being of spirit and light. The key is to live in union and not orthodox separation.
We do well to embark on our own journey of faith discovery. We may, like baby magpies, swallow the regurgitated food that is our parents beliefs. But unless we examine our faith and the reasons for our beliefs we will never fly far and forever be contained in some form of the nest that insulates us from real life. Richard Rohr observes, “Untested faith tends to produce a very mechanistic and impersonal spirituality. Mature faith, however, almost always has a quality of paradox and mystery about it—as if to leave room for the freedom of God.” (1)
NOT A RELIGION BUT A PERSON
When Jesus established Himself as the way, the truth and the life, He was declaring Himself the Source of our being and the living door to a lived fellowship with the trinity. To be united with the trinity is to have fellowship with the creation, to nurture it and not abuse it.
We were made to live in God and in the new covenant we do. Union with God is a state of being that is ours. But it is possessed by belief. It’s much more than the citing of a proof text. It’s state of being that is you in union with God.
‘He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.’ Col 1.15-17.
You are in God and God is in you. As such you are one with the creation and one with the spirit of life.
