We can have been raised in dysfunctional families either overtly or covertly due to a form of Christianity that goes under the name of Christ. But which is not Christ-like.* John warned of a kind of Christianity imbued with the spirit of anti-christ. He wrote specifically# of the legalistic kind in which Christ as our life is subverted to words, laws and positions. Several writers have written on toxic christianity and churches that abuse. Indeed some perversions of the gospel are a form of abuse that cripple the lives of even intelligent and well educated people who live in a mistaken loyalty to them.
Leanne Payne writes, “
Today, there is a multitude of Christians whose failure to accept themselves is accompanied by a needless and ongoing sense of guilt and shame, or even more critically, an intense and even pathological self-hatred. Often these persons have come to Christ out of dysfunctional homes and environments, places where evil has, whether overtly or more subtly, run rampant, ravaging their spirits and souls, if not their bodies as well.”
They dislike themselves and dislike others – the Gaslighting Christians and their manifestation of the only christ they know.
We need to understand that a perverted gospel is evil because it robs people of identity and most of all of spirit and life. In addition, these churches can nurture trivial pursuits as holiness and the personnel in them the practice of the gaslighting of colleagues. Personhood, as in being a whole and gracious person, originates in the trinity and is mediated to us in Jesus Christ. In Jesus we are bathed and baptised into the personhood of God to grow into the fullness that Adam lost for us and which Christ has restored to us. In Christ we can be us and in Christ we can participate in the love that is God by being included in His Being and manifesting His nature.
Many Believers who belong to churches of the dysfunctional kind live in an imagined separation from God, unaware that by the cross and atonement God has undone Adam and incorporated us into Himself. Yet they live a version of Christianity that is an attempt to gain inclusion in God. But they are already included and already belong. The living of this delusion breeds frustration and bitterness that is often turned against the self and others – like work colleagues in Christian organisations.
Leanne Payne first book is entitled Real Presence for a reason. It’s found in our living the incarnation – otherwise known as participating in the divine nature and life in the Spirit – His Spirit come in your flesh.
The cure for emotional disease and dysfunctionality is our entering into the Real Gospel and the True Christ. Paul stated that ‘other gospels’ bring a curse and they do. Jesus clearly implies that additions and subtractions to His Gospel are other gospels that rob us of life and peace. ‘Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.  “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.  “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture’ John 10.7-9 NIV.
Reality is Christ. This is a reality in which the people of some sects have never lived. What they have lived in is a distorted gospel and a false christ of the law. Douglas Cambell nails it when he writes, “
There’s a sense in which God has brought to us a new reality, a perfected reality, which is superior to the one that we’re occupying. In Christ, he’s managed to organize things so we participate in it in Christ. Christ has taken everything that we are, has terminated it, and then has been resurrected again into this new state where he’s enthroned and sits on the right hand of the Father.
“Our participation in Christ is by way of the Spirit. As we’re drawn into what Christ has done, we’re drawn into this new transformation of what we are. And this is a humanity in which the power of sin and death and corruption has been broken. It’s quite concrete. I want to say that this is Reality with a capital R. This is more real than anything else that you or I experience.
“Paul is emphatic that as we experience some of the suffering in this life, at the same time we experience some of the faithfulness and the obedience, we experience some of the martyrological side of Christ, and we know from that, that we are bolted into this story, and we are at the front end of a story that ends in the termination of all that’s bad, but a glorious resurrection of all that’s good.” (1) This is to say that you will be opposed by fellow Christians and believers you have known all your life. Because the ‘offence of the cross’ undercuts all entitlement thinking and makes Christ our life all of Christ and none of us.
‘But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!’ Gal 1.8 NIV.
A legalised gospel is ‘entitlement’ as Christianity. As such it is a tare, ‘another gospel’ and a closing of the Door that is meant to be Christ our life. We can be workers in the law. But in the incarnation we are heirs, sons/daughters and agents of spirit and life.
# The law makes the incarnation of little effect or suffocates it entirely – which is why law based communities are so wooden.
*Not Christlike because he is a legalised and therefore a false christ.
