SAUL TO PAUL IS CHRIST OUR LIFE

A Christ who is all of God and all of man comes to live in you and weave Himself into your being. This is Godliness and it means participating in God. In the Christ of God, we are woven in to God by God in the person of Jesus. This means that the Body of Christ is only faintly described by citing a scripture about the ‘one loaf’. Christ’s living body is described when we agree with Him that we are His life. We are one with God, are imparted with the knowledge of God by God and are the expression of God because the Son of God is manifested as us.

Knowing God is oneness with God. Not talk about God.

THE STICK MAN

Fundamentalism is an attempted expression in the letter of that which cannot be contained in words. The Word of God who is the Christ of God is not words but the being who is fully man and fully God.

A FIGMENT GOD

Thomas Torrance wrote. “The practical and the epistemological effect of a fundamentalism of this kind is to give an infallible Bible and a set of rigid evangelical beliefs primacy over God’s self-revelation which is mediated to us through the Bible. This effect is only reinforced by the regular fundamentalist identification of biblical statements about the truth with the truth itself to which they refer. …The living reality of God’s self-revelation through Jesus Christ and in the Spirit is in point of fact made secondary to the Scriptures.” (1) Thus we can get a paper gospel and a false christ.

CRIPPLED STATE OF BEING

If we live from the law we live from the knowledge of good and evil. If we live from a Christian version of the knowledge of good and evil we live from the law that Paul was liberated from after chaining up many Christians on behalf of God – or so he imagined. If we live from the law we will convince ourselves that we are in grace while lacking the discernment to see that we are in chains and chaining up those unfortunate enough to follow us.

Saul of Tarsus, was a man who once saw the law as representing God’s life. Yet he became the apostle of Christ our life.

ENFOLDED IN GOD

Paul’s ‘Christ our life’ is much more than the ‘transformed us’ who gets to heaven. It’s about now. Life in the Spirit means that Jesus mediates Himself to us so that we live as the expression of His Person. Christ does not mediate religion to us. People do, misguided institutions do and teachers who have never understood the Gospel of Jesus and the apostles do. Jesus does not mediate the Ten Commandments to you. Neither does He meditate a Christian version of the knowledge of good and evil. Jesus mediates Himself to you and more. In oneness with you He shares His life as a member of the trinity with you.

By the incarnation you participate in Christ’s life.

Jeff Turner observes, “I see Paul’s experience as being much more than just an isolated case, but a microcosm of the human race when it operates out of the knowledge of good and evil. It breeds a passion within us, though not a passion that is towards God. Rather, it creates in us a passion that is against things which we feel would offend Him.” (2) Sometimes it creates in us the illusion that living in the incarnation rather than the law would offend Him because it offends us.
