There is no dualism in God. Our life in God really is a harmonious whole. We flourish as sons when we live move and have our being in God. To be a son/daughter is to be an expression of God.
IN HIS LIFE
We were made to live in God and we can - if we align ourselves with the Christ of God and what He has done in making the two one - which is to say gifting us communion with the trinity. Our union is not union with a monolithic god. God is three, which means that the union we are gifted is a fellowship with three persons who are one God*. Jesus promised and it is now a reality that the trinity have made their home in us.
‘Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them’ John 14.23 NIV. What is His teaching? It is that Jesus is our life, known also as the vicarious humanity of Jesus.
Adam has been undone and Jesus has made us one with God. This is the foundation of the gospel and the essence of the Kingdom of God. It is the source in which ‘the church Jesus builds’ is rooted and the soil from which the gifts of the Spirit grow. Gifts of the Spirit and life in the Spirit are not the same thing. We can manifest some of the gifts without living in the Spirit as did old testament men and women of God. Life in the Spirit is a new covenant reality unknown to God fearing people of old testament times. This is because the interwoveness of humans and God – the incarnation- achieved by Jesus on behalf of Father and Holy Spirit was not deployed until after the resurrection. So don’t live in old testament separation when your inheritance is new testament union.
Jesus declared this relationship of union when He said, ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. This is the foundation of the Kingdom. Not the gifts. The gifts are the fruit of this interwoveness. The incarnation is the rock of which Jesus spoke. It is the foundation in which the entire Kingdom of God rests: Christ in you.
‘The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash’ Matt 7.27 NIV. The rock is the fact of the incarnation and our living from it. To make the gifts and charismata the foundation is to invite programs that never come to anything or to build structures that have no foundation.
To build on anything other than the incarnation is to build on the sand. It’s a mistake to attempt to build on Holy Spirit and the gifts. They are a function of our union with God and the relationship of sonship. It’s like building a tree-house on a branch that has been cut off from the trunk.
By living as sons in spirit and in truth; by being rooted in union we have access to the Holy. The core is our union with God. The periphery and the fruits of this union is the gifts of the Spirit. The attempt to make charismatic culture the core is ill-advised and can only end in tears. As exciting as the words, ‘Catch the Fire’ may be this, is not the fullness of the Kingdom. Union with God is the fullness from which the gifts of the Spirit spring. When charismatic culture is linked to old covenant mindsets, the Kingdom is weakened and the new creation is impeded. Gifts treated as a separate entity and practiced in a separationist mindset have the capacity to be diluted with the flesh and polluted by unclean spirits.
NEW COVENANT CORE
The new covenant is not optional. It’s what God did. What He achieved for all and what all who believe are meant to live in: Life in the One Spirit. Living in a hyper-spirit culture we run the risk of speaking out degraded ‘words’ or just plain nonsense. Disorganization, confusion and just ineffectual ministry is the result of living spirit-filled in an old covenant mindset. Father son and Holy Spirit are one. We and the trinity are one. We can live in this giftedness. It is ours. Fullness and the gifts will function harmoniously and we will be seeds that grow from good soil bearing much fruit. Find out what the new covenant is and live it.
*Trinity denial is yoked to legalism and law-worship because law is an abstraction and so is a monistic god – as in the Un-moved Mover.
