As a young man I was attracted to some of T S Elliot’s poems. I particularly remember the one about ‘Head-piece filled with straw.’ If what he described as human wisdom was accurate in 1922, it is appallingly more so today with the appearance of notions as nonsensical as ‘false facts’ and the description of the office of president of the United States as ‘A position that clearly no longer requires any kind of intelligence or sensitivity to occupy.’
“If you observe wise people, you see that they actually lose a certain interest in gathering more and more information, books, and news. These can clutter what is already a clear field, open sight, and simple presence to the moment … We already know far more than Jesus or Buddha ever knew, but the great difference is that they knew what they did know from a different level and in a different way… Jesus talks about the one who has being given more and those who have not losing what little they have (Matthew 13:12). Once your presence is right, you grow from everything, even the problematic. If your presence is wrong, you will not even recognize the Real Presence when it shows itself every day. The Presence will be there — it always is — but you won’t be.” (1)
We can be blind to Holy Spirit’s presence and unseeing of Spirit’s absence. Blind because we do not see or hear – because maybe we have chosen not to. As a result we are oblivious of living water and occupy ourselves preserving dead water.
STATE OF BEING
Our presence is right today when our hearts and minds, our spirit and souls are operating out of the new covenant. Here we are one with God and one with existence as conceived by God. This is much more than a theological construct. It is real time union with God. We were made to live in God. And we can. If we choose.
We can be present to reality or absent to it.
We can live in the presence if we are spiritually astute enough to live from the spirit of wisdom and revelation rather than as hollow men leaning together in zealous support of specious identities and misguided theologies. These are theologies that prop up a case of special pleading; a sectarian reality that is not real and which leaves us as potential sons of God but never in sons in spirit and in truth. We exist rather than live, as the shadow men or the hollow men who as faint representations of our real selves promote an almost gospel like the wind in dry grass.
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass. T S Elliot - The Hollow Men
POTENT NOT STAGNANT
You are capable of speaking words of spirit and life because you are woven into God and alive. You are ignited with His Spirit and replete with His life. Or not. You are present because you are a new creation, living in that which alone is real and eternal – the fellowship of God which is the trinity in you and you in the trinity.
You can fly as an eagle or spend your entire religious life as an unhatched eagle’s egg.
As an eagle you are present to God, present to yourself, present to others and present to a world that needs real people to re-create the earth as it was designed to be: The manifestation of heaven on earth. God is not somewhere else, not up there or over there or in that day but not in this day. God is. God is in you. You are His manifestation today and every day.
