IT'S YES AND YES
The issue of election and predestination can cast a pall of anxiety over some Believers if it is implied that there is another hurdle to jump that is an addition to receiving Christ as Saviour. If there is - Christ is not really our saviour - and some other stipulation is. Fortunately the gospel is not yes and no but yes and yes. There’s certainty and security in Christ who is our life in every imaginable way. Stephen Morrison explains through Torrance that,
THE ONE ELECT MAN
“Election is the love of the Father towards the Son in the Holy Spirit, the eternal decree of God’s being, turned outwards towards us and made incarnate in our humanity.
YOU ARE IN HIM
“In the election of Jesus Christ, human beings are elected to be the children of God. Jesus is the one elect man in whom all find themselves elected by freely and personally participating in His election, that is, in His relationship with the Father.
“It was Their relationship that became incarnate, as the Son maintained communion with the Father and the Spirit during the entirety of His life and ministry as a human. God’s love and free decision to be our God (election) became incarnate in the Word made flesh.” (1)
YOU ARE ELECTED IN CHRIST
Christ’s relationship with His Father has become incarnate in your flesh, which is why it’s important to grip into the truth, that Christ has come in our flesh, not only that we may express Him but that our election as sons be certified and secured in Him.
“Rather than an abstract God and an arbitrary selection of human beings, Torrance refocuses the doctrine back upon the person of Jesus Christ as both the electing God and elected human. There is no election behind the back of Jesus Christ, just as there is no God who remains hidden behind Him. Only as we look to Jesus do we come to understand eternal election in our humanity.” (2)
CHRIST IS YOUR LIFE
There is no law separate to Jesus Christ. No body of religion that gains us access to Him. Because of the incarnation Christ is woven into our being and in Him we are woven into God.
God is not an unmoved mover. Our life and our righteousness is not an abstraction but is made flesh (human) – our flesh- in the person of Jesus, because He came in the flesh so that all that is His will be ours in our the flesh by His Spirit. Christ has come in our flesh as our Messiah and He comes in our flesh individually by the One Spirit. This is the ‘One Spirit’ Paul cites. ‘But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him’ 1 Cor 6.17 NLT. This is ‘oneness’ in spirit and in truth.
