HE IS YOUR REST FOR HUMAN RESTLESSNESS
You have a life that is entirely yours in Christ. He is your life and that which is Christ’s life is yours. What kind of life is this? It’s life without measure. You did not earn it. Jesus did.
‘But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify’ Rom 3.21 NIV.
‘And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith’
Phil 3.9 NIV.
This ‘righteousness’ is more than an infinite list of do’s and don’ts. It is Christ’s life as yours.
What Paul had to say about the law applies to living from a belief system, from religion or from a Christin culture. Any form of law adherence suffocates the human spirit and withers the soul. We are in the law whether we are ‘Moses Disciple’ and attached to one law as an icon, or whether we live from a fabric of ‘Christian Behaviors.’
There is a subtle but dramatic difference between ‘living out christianity’ and being the manifestation of ‘Christ My Life.’ One is religion, the other is what Jesus died to give us and what His Spirit lives to sustain – Christ come in our flesh.
The Spirit of Sonship is not found in the law. It is the effect of Jesus as you, the result of God manifest as God’s daughters and sons. The cure for sin is not a dose of law. The cure is cutting out of our lives those ‘non - Christ practises’ that we have substituted for His Person as us.
One can live in a barbaric legalism like some Muslims do or in a subtle and pervasive legalism like ‘This is my belief system.’ The fruit of Christ my life will always be glory for God and ourselves as genuine sons. The fruit of the law is inevitably weeds, poison ivy and dead wood, no matter what level of sincerity we live in. The effect of law and religion is a dulled life and dim powers of spiritual discernment.
The fruit of the Spirit is Jesus as you.
Francois Du Toit expresses it this way - “The law of perfect liberty does not rely on man’s ability and disciplined performance to obey and perform routine regulations and commandments. Like the law of gravity, this law works spontaneously within a specific ‘magnetic’ field of influence. Living under the law of Moses or any moral law for that matter, depends entirely upon the individual’s willpower and self-discipline to consistently adhere to and obey the requirements of the law. Thus the law of obligation became the basis of man’s experience of condemnation, and a sense of failure and shortcoming. What keeps religion enslaved to this law is fear of punishment and a hope for reward, whether it is the thought of escaping hell and gaining heaven one day, or at least the pious feeling of applause and recognition now.” (1)
DEATH IN ADAM. LIFE IN CHRIST
We are not called to live in reference to the law in the post-cross age. The law, it may be allowed, leads to Christ. As such it has use for sinners but not for sons. They live in the Spirit of Sonship which is Christ their life. Thus Christ is us. All we are and all we touch becomes holy and ignited with the life of heaven.
Any gospel that teaches an incomplete atonement, has no biblical legitimacy. It is a work of the anti-christ spirit. It excludes people from the Body of Christ because it is no gospel at all. As Paul declared, ‘I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ’ Gal 1.6,7 NIV.
Ang gospel that positions Jesus as a method of excelling at the law did not come from God. It is not true and is a negation of Christ come in our flesh to be ourselves as sons of God. ‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.’ A gospel in which Jesus is Law Empowerer In Chief is a subversive undoing of Christ’s the gospel of the Kingdom. We can observe this when one Believer urges another to ‘keep close to Jesus.’ Such ‘keeping’ is itself a culture of laws and arises from a failure to embrace our post cross inheritance. In any case Jesus lives in all and weaves His Spirit into our being. This is life in the Spirit and the realisation in people of ‘being holy as God is holy.’
MYSTERY OF INIQUITY
You might be amazed at the convoluted and ingenious attempts to make the law a part of new testament life. In Bible studies, people will say we are saved by grace – then say but ‘but’ and go on to list all the behaviors one must do to be accepted by God. Christ is either your life or you are. The former is the Kingdom. The latter is religion and institutionalism.
The gospel of the Kingdom is unequivocally Christ our life. The vicarious humanity of Jesus is an expression of God’s belief about us and about Himself. This is the gospel of the Kingdom. Accept no watering down, no dilution or pollution of this gospel because its source is the anti-christ spirit and the end will be loss and even spiritual death.
