Just as a miser can stultify her growth as a person by living out of scarcity when things are not scarce, so we can shrink our personhood by living from the law when the reality is that Christ is our life. Baxter Kruger observes , “Paul sums it all up in one beautiful and rather huge statement in Colossians. “For in him all the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form,” i.e., as a human being (COL 1:19; 2:9). Now, if all the fullness of deity dwells in Jesus Christ, then he is necessarily the source, the center and the life of all created things..” (1)
YOU ARE A SON IN CHRIST
We have our being in Jesus. Being is a Person.
Jesus is fully God and not just the logos as a principle of creation rationality. He is the Person in whom all things consists and hold together. He is incarnated in you.
The miser lives less than she is, lives out of scarcity, is obsessed with survival which shrivels her being and stunts her outlook. In Maslow’s hierarchy of being miser’s are confined to physicality and body maintenance. This is analogous to legalism with its obsession with sin management. This is why Paul in Galatians distinguishes between the slave who lives in the law and the son who lives in God.
WHY LIVE AS A SLAVE WHEN YOU ARE A KING?
The question is, why would you want to live from the law which is an abstraction when you be incarnated with this magnificent fullness of life that is the Risen Christ? Yet people do, and in doing so contain themselves in the prison of a lesser gospel of the kind from which Jesus has set all captives free. As part of this they promote this lesser gospel that robs people of life in the name of enhancing it. Any gospel that is not Christ our life always retards our spirit and life.
CHRIST IN YOU
Jesus does not live to mediate the law, moral perfection or Christian values. Jesus lives to mediate Himself. The mediation of Christ means that Jesus is woven into our being so that Jill and George become an expression of Christ.
We can be attracted to a law gospel because it appears to offer salvation by formula - do these key things and ‘Bob’s your uncle.’ Or because it seems an easy way of inventing our own grace or making our distinctives our messiah. Or because our observance of these things secures a sense of ‘entitlement.’ Or because we think our perspective and distinctives confer on us a status and identity. But take care. Who needs the identity of the Elder Brother?
Baxter Kruger observes that, “It could be possible for the life of creation to come from that part of the fullness of deity that did not dwell in Jesus Christ. But Paul leaves no room whatever for any such notion. All the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus Christ. There is no part or side or dimension of divine life that is outside of Christ. Thus there is no possibility for a creative act of God apart from Jesus Christ.” (2) We may deduce from this that there is nothing outside of Christ, such as the law that is separate to Christ or to which Christ is subordinate. Christ as son of man is complete in Himself and you are complete in Him. Christ is fullness to which nothing need be added because we cannot make complete that which is already complete. Christ is infinity.
