Truth is true because it is. Meaning that what we name as true must accord with the facts. Facts can be persuasive but when self-interest is involved they don’t count for much as we have seen in recent times.*
All kinds of inane statements can be made to support the folly that makes us comfortable. The bottom line is ‘Are we in favour of life or are we among those who have accommodated themselves to some degree of death.’
RIGHTLY DIVIDING Our theology is not necessarily correct because it is ‘our theology’ or ‘what we have always believed’ or what we have absorbed in our church or what we have come to understand in our life as a Christian. The new covenant is the basis of new testament life, yet millions of Believers do not know what it is and do not live in it. Instead they live in a mixture of old and new covenant assumptions.
The fact that some ministers can ‘make a thing’ out of condemning the immoral and think they are helping Christ tells us that popular Christianity may not always be Christ’s Christianity. Christ’s Christianity is that He has presented Himself as the Life and the Way.
MISSING THE POINT
If you have been taught that our salvation is chiefly about sin management you have been taught wrong.
The gospel of the Kingdom is clear and precise enough for all to lay hold of, yet many live from habit, tradition and their denominations perspective even when the Bible instructs otherwise. Paul says clearly, ‘I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" Gal 2.21 NIV.
What is the gospel of the Kingdom. Simply that Christ is our life. The simplicity and comprehensiveness of this can be hard to accept if we are the product of our self-made myths or have been raised from an infant in a distorted gospel.
CONTINUE AS THEY WERE Believers continue in their legalisms while entire denominations make a theology and a life out of the law. Stephen Morrison makes this observation about one of the leading theologians of the twentieth century, “Torrance’s work is marked by the rigorous pursuit of scientific theology. By the term “scientific,” he means clear and precise knowledge, not impersonal or abstract. Scientific theology denotes a particular method for approaching the knowledge of God.” (1)
This is a theology derived from who God is, what God has done for us and who we are as a result of God’s accomplishment in Christ. This is not a theology of words, positions or pseudo revelations. It a theology of being.
BENT THEOLOGY DEPRIVES US
People can have a bent theology and have a reasonable walk with the Lord. Or not. Because of grace and because Christ is what He is irrespective of what people think about Him all can benefit from His presence. But grace goes better with truth than grace and ‘this is what I believe’ no matter what an aberration this may be. In most cases people who live in the fullness of grace are nicer people than those who live in the law. Grace is not an abstraction. Grace is His life as our life.
