Jesus said, ‘Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved’ MATT 9.17 NIV. Our post cross inheritance is not rubbing Holy Spirit anointing into the law and old covenant way. It’s a totally new and living way that is Christ our life. This is incarnation.
We are either the new creation as sons/daughters or the old covenant creation as workers with band aids. Thomas Merton writes, “The first obligation of the Christian is to maintain their freedom from all superstitions, all blind taboos and religious formalities, indeed from all empty forms of legalism.” There is no full form of legalism. Legalism makes God less than God is and ourselves less than we are.
GOD AND YOU REVEALED IN CHRIST
God is both hidden in darkness and revealed in Jesus Christ. We ourselves are made in this image. John Powell has written brilliantly on the self that is never stagnant but always becoming. Many Christians are afraid to be who they are for fear they may ‘confront’ someone. The truth is that we become who we are in encounter with Jesus and in the tutoring of our Father. Repentance means that there comes a time when old lies and embedded fables need to be confronted an renounced. Some of us live as a false self all our lives for no other reason than we are tied to the law.
THE NEW YOU IS CHRIST AS YOU
‘Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision [or any aspect of the law] means anything; what counts is the new creation’ Gal 6.15 NIV.
The new creation is your born again and maturing self now flourishing in the spirit of sonship. You in your persona are the manifestation of this Spirit because Christ has come in your flesh.
There’s the self that is seen by the world and the self that resides in the hidden depths of our being. We are blessed as a person and we bless others the most as our real selves – the self, known before time began and the self, brought into being by the resurrected Jesus Christ. The maturing of the self as a son of God occurs when we live in God and live as God incarnated beings. This is not some airy-fairy religiosity but reality – the reality of Christ come in our flesh.
God is not an expression of the law and never was. The law is an entity foreign to God’s being and the culture of heaven. God is the trinity – three persons, one God. The trinity is the foundational reality of the universe, of our salvation and of our life as sons and daughters of God.
With Jesus as your life you are the expression of the real you. This is the new creation you as the expression of Jesus Christ. Being ‘Christ-like’ does not come about by ‘trying to be like Jesus’. It comes about as we agree that Jesus is in us and becoming us. We facilitate this by living in the Spirit and not in the law. The letter kills but the spirit gives life. Nevertheless people persist in a letter formed life as though God has been silent on the subject. The person for whom the law has come in the flesh is of the flesh. The person for whom Christ has come in their flesh is alive in spirit and life.
The law was and never has been descriptive of God. “The basic decision taken at [The Council of] Nicaea made it clear that the eternal relation between the Father and the Son in the Godhead was regarded in the Church as the supreme truth upon which everything else in the Gospel depends.
Jesus Christ is himself the content of God’s unique self-revelation to mankind. It is on the ground of what God has actually revealed of his own nature in him as his only begotten Son that everything else to be known of God and of his relation to the world and human beings is to be understood.
It is only when we know God the Father in and through his Son who belongs to his own being as God that we may know him in any true and accurate way, that is, know God strictly in accordance with his divine nature.” (1) CHRIST YOUR LIGHT
Nevertheless some contain themselves in their separationist religion because this is their identity and status. Sadly it is neither truth or life. ‘But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.’ 2 COR 3.14 NIV. When our Christ is the Christ of God and our gospel is His Gospel of the Kingdom and the doctrine of the apostles old veils are removed.
