Jesus insisted that He and His Father were one. And they were. He lived from His Father. Nothing else. As The Son He was the expression of His Father, yet an independent being. Only the Father knew the Son and only the Son knew the Father. Jesus neither lived from the law or upheld the law as some cultures teach. He revealed His Father and carried out the plan of His Father – to bring the estranged sons of God into the union enjoyed by Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
And He did. With the cross the Holy Family achieved the forgiveness of sins and the at-one-ment of humanity with God. Jesus declared that we come to Father by Him and more. That when we believe His teaching the Holy Family take up residence in us. Paul delighted in the fact that Christ comes to live in us and this accomplishes His glory and ours.
We live in the now and the not yet. Jesus has made us one with Father. Yet He is working to bring all things together in Himself. We are co-labourers with Him when we live and minister from the union we already have. Ministering from union multiplies union. Ministering from old covenant separation, not so much.
There was no foreign element between Jesus and Father. No separation as there was between Adam and God in the knowledge of good and evil. Jesus and Father were one because ONE is the I AM of the trinity. Jesus was the life of God, the righteousness of God, the revelation of God and the will of God. He was God. ‘Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is’ 1 John 3.2 KJV. It is the union of Father and Son that is the point of this post. The point because this union is now our union; our possession and our inheritance. This is the difference between the sons of God and the sons of Adam. In Jesus we are in the new Adam who as the Son of Man is the new Father of the human race. In Jesus we are the sons of God because Jesus is God’s Son and we are in Him. This is the full meaning of being born again – not in a legalistic definition of changing from bad morals to good one. But by achieving a new state of being as a result of being gifted a new origin in God. Any way you look at it our union with God is covered and guaranteed in Jesus, Father and Holy Spirit.
‘For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God’ 1 Pet 1.23 NIV.
THE PLAN This is what the Holy Family have achieved on behalf of us. This is the plan. The outcome is that we are one with God and incarnated with His presence. There is no other plan other than Christ come in our flesh. This is it. No room for adaptation or denominational variation. This is the one gospel of the Kingdom – Christ in you, the hope and emerging reality of glory.
Since Christ lives in us and manifests His Spirit through our humanity, all of us are free to be His brother and the sons and daughters of our Father according to our unique sonship. We are talking individuality. Each of us a unique expression of Jesus that makes up the fullness of His being. By manifesting Jesus in this way we display the fullness of Christ as the church. But we are not free to undo the one plan and purvey some addition as though it is a fresh revelation, as though there was something God left out that he had to add later in history. There is no additional revelation other than the witness of Jesus and the apostles.
‘But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!’ Gal 1.8,9 NIV. The curse result from a gospel of separation – the separation that results from making some addition to Christ our life.
So we must take care in what we do. Don’t revise the spirit into the letter. Don’t back-track from Christ as you into a shabby attempt to make the law be you. Don’t hijack Jesus in to make him ‘The Law’s Little Helper’ and your ‘Helper to keep the law.’ He’s not as small as the law, or as bereft of life as the law. He is spirit and life in Himself.
BODY OF DEATH
Should we undo the at-one-ment by re-establishing law, we undo the our union with God and place ourselves in separation – in separation even though Jesus has made you one with Father. If ever there was an exact description of crucifying the son of God anew this is it – undoing the cross, retreating into Adam, revitalising the knowledge of good and evil and telling one and all you have something special – some new slant on salvation.
So what are we saying? Simply this: We cannot realise the kingdom of God by adding Holy Spirit to any old bunch of beliefs. We need to add ourselves to Father’s beliefs about His Son and about us and our inheritance. Holy Spirit added to the body of death need to be seen for what it is: A vain attempt to achieve life. Here we have rooted our lives in the air and not in the soil. The soil is our Trinitarian life in fellowship with God. Father is both gardener and soil. Jesus is the vine and the root who makes us one with the womb of creation. We are the fruit of this vine. In ourselves we are living fruit and the manifestation of the fullness of God.
