The new wineskin is an image that has been often utilised for anything spiritually new. Its real denotation is the new covenant. Jesus was not talking about the plan of salvation as a generality when He spoke of not adding patched to old wineskins. He was talking about the complete abandonment of the old and the embrace of life itself in Himself. Jesus meant the absolute dichotomy between our life in Adam (and in Moses) and our life in Jesus. The former tries to make religion while in separation from God. The latter is the spirit of sonship brought about by union with God.
‘The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father’ Rom 8.15 NIV.
Incarnation is the new covenant realised and manifest in you. The anointing and spiritual gifts are the result. Life in the Spirit is union with God. The gifts of the Spirit are the effect of union with God.
‘I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one’ John 17.22 NLT.
The new covenant is the soil of the Kingdom of God. It’s what the trinity combined to conceive as the new and living way of being in fellowship with God; of living out His new creation and being sons and daughters in spirit and in truth. None of this is a massive expression of self-effort and pious discipline. It is wholly the expression of the Spirit of Jesus as you. The fruits of the spirit are not abstract entities hanging in the air about your person. They are your life expressed in Jesus and Jesus expressed as your life. You are in our Father and Father is in you.
‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law’ Gal 5.22 NLT.
The new covenant is not living the old covenant with Jesus’ help. It is not a clever way of keeping the law with the assistance of Jesus. It is not a morphing of the Jewish temple into the Christian church. The new covenant is Christ our life. It is Jesus manifest in you, then as the church, then as society and hen as the rejuvenation of the earth. Considered together this is the new creation. If judgment comes to deal with those, who through refusing Jesus destroy the earth, RE-CREATION COMES as the reward to those for whom Christ is life.
‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’ John 15.5 NIV.
We cannot restore the new creation by rubbing Holy Spirit oil into the old wineskin. They don’t mix. I’ve seen that law combined with Holy Spirit anointing produces a dud cake. This is because the old wineskin is Adam’s world that exists in separation and alienation from our Father. The new wineskin is filled with the spirit of sonship. This is the life that belongs to people because Jesus has drawn them into Himself.
Life in the Spirit of Christ is the Kingdom of God. This is a kingdom that grows from His person and from our rootedness in the soil of the trinity. They (God) are the hub (womb) of all life and creative power. This is the soil from which His Kingdom grows. Trees of life do not grow from the old covenant, the law or gospels that diverge from the teaching of Jesus and Paul and are really ‘another gospel.’ Should we attempt to rub Holy Spirit oil into an old covenant wineskin we will cause Holy Spirit to fade out and eventually wear ourselves out.
