Holiness, wholeness and life comes to us from the person of Jesus alone. The resurrected Jesus is the Source of all life. He is the Second Adam and His church is the second Eve. We as His church have come out of His side, are part of Him and an expression of Him.
Alive and multiplied in His people Jesus becomes the regenerated society, the Kingdom of God and the new earth. This is the new creation . The new creation is always the manifestation of Jesus as the life of the world. He is both our Sabbath rest and the engine of all that is alive and new. This is why Paul asserts that what counts is not any religious observance. What counts is the new creation welling up in you and the church.
‘Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation’ Gal 6.15 NIV.
What did Jesus mean when He said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’? He meant that He possesses life in Himself and IS LIFE IN HIMSELF. When John referred to Him as the logos he was saying that Jesus is the reason and the Spirit in which the universe has its meaning, purpose and cohesion. When John wrote of ‘Christ come in our flesh’ He was writing of this new creation rest and life settling our souls and rising -up in our spirit to transform the world.
Paul wrote, ‘Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death’ Rom 8.2 NIV. The law of sin and death is the system and culture of Adam in general and the law of Moses in particular. The law of the spirit of life is the person of Jesus manifest in people. Jesus is the law of the spirit of life which is why He is the new creation in person and as the manifestation of the church.
Paul declared Jesus sovereign and the agent of meaning and life in the entire existence. ‘The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and IN HIM ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER’ Col 1.15-17.
Jesus not only holds our life together in challenge and chaos. He draws all people and all things together in Himself. He makes humanity one and draws in nature to be healed and whole. Don’t add anything to Jesus. There’s no need to add to infinity. Add anything and you weaken your ability to received His life. Retain anything from the law and the old and dead way and you leach life from that which was meant to be your new and living way. There is only one source of spirit and life and this is Jesus and with Him our baptism into our life in Father and Holy Spirit.
