In Christ there is fullness of life. There is complete rest here in the comfort of being fully loved and fully accepted. But why in Christ? Because in Christ is revealed the true face, the true nature, the true extent of God’s love. Christ is the demonstration that God is love. Love is a person and that person is Jesus. In seeing Jesus we see our Father and what is even more amazing, to see Jesus is to see ourselves.
Living as a Christian it would be easy to live from a culture and a belief system and think this was the Kingdom. But we would be living robbed. When Christ is not our life; when Christianity is our life - which means that religion is our life - we do not see Him clearly and neither do we see our Father as He is. Jesus is the living way, the only way of knowing Him as Himself without distortion. This is to say that Jesus is His own lens, the lens of our Father and Holy Spirit. Jesus is in fact the only lens through which we can know ourselves accurately and know God. In Jesus, all veils are removed. In Him we know God as He is gain understanding of ourselves as we really are and gain the ability to discern His gospel from ‘other gospels.’
‘And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit’ 2 Cor 3.18 NIV.
Life and glory come from the Spirit. The law can never be a mode of knowing God and being our true selves. Father cannot be known through the law. It distorts who He is and who we know ourselves to be. Law undermines His nature in our sight and portrays Him as who He is not – a kind of celestial menace. Law suffocates the human spirit, the Holy spirit, the mind and intelligence. Where there is vision people live in the Spirit. Where there is no vision people live in the law and home-in on trivialities as if they came from God. Jesus said not one jot or tittle would pass from the law until ‘all be fulfilled.’ All was fulfilled at the cross. The new and living way of fulfilment is Christ in you, Christ as you, Christ manifest as His church.
The fall did not change God. It did not annul the fact that He is love and that His love for us is limitless. But it changed human beings and the way they see Him. This is why we need the mind of Christ and not a Father or a Son created in our own image. As has been correctly noted, fallen Adam projected his pain onto God and created a mythological deity.
‘For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith’ Gal 3.26 NIV.
The cross is God’s way of drawing us into the fullness of His life, of revealing Father in spirit and in truth, of dissipating our own lies and the lies of the Enemy, of filling our souls with the reality of His love. But more than this it is the new and living way of making we and Father one – one with Jesus and one with Holy Spirit. Here we grow as sons in the knowledge that we are loved with an infinite love and that we matter. In law and its fellow-travellers we are sons notionally. We are sons of Hagar outside our inheritance of sonship in spirit and in truth. In Jesus, we are sons and daughters in spirit and in truth – not agents of death but of the new creation Kingdom of infinite life. God is alive in you. You are alive because of Him. His righteousness is your righteousness. In Jesus, you are manifesting the life of a son and a daughter.
‘Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is’ 1 John 3.2 KJV.
