Sons. There’s a lot in this. We are talking the Spirit of Sonship – a state of being and a level of adult authority. I have just read an article in the paper saying that the United States and the free world is led by a child – a person who in many ways does not function as an adult. As Believers we are sons in fact. But we can live in infantile dependency as consumers of religion, never becoming sons in spirit and truth and living far below our authority as apostolic representatives of our Father. One reason for this is the ‘battery hen’ nature of institutional religion. The other is living in the old covenant.
NOW WE ARE THE SONS OF GOD
‘Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children’ Gal 4.25 NIV.
There’s a difference between living in Christianity and living Christ our life. In one you are alive and in the other you are not. Well not much. There are really nice people in the Body who are shadows of sons. Living in faint sonship they are never fully themselves because they are not sons of God in spirit and truth. They are caricatures of themselves because they live in a veiled and smothered inheritance. For them an apostolic life is a possibility not a reality. What is an apostolic life? The life of a son who lives in the spirit of sonship who is an agent of family. Do you need to be a spiritual superhero to do this? No. Just live in your inheritance as a son of the free woman. The slave woman’s sons belong to the old covenant. The free woman’s family to the new. How do you get into the new covenant state of privilege and grace? You are already there. Agree with Father and live from where Jesus has placed you.
‘May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God’ Eph 3.19 NLT.
There are sons notionally and sons by inheritance. But are they living in this inheritance? Have they embraced it? Have they dug up the treasure in the field and eaten it like a prized truffle. No. They live a second, third of seventh best life. They are a creature of Christianity. Not fully a son and not really emancipated from death – because they remain with Adam and the body of death. But all have a life that is Christ from first to last. Jesus and not your church is your life.
‘Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given’ John 1.16 NIV.
You can have drips of life or you can be drunk on it. Eating Jesus flesh and drinking His blood is spirit and life. It is humanity to the utmost. There will never be our utmost for His highest in anything less than Jesus our life. Never in the old covenant. Not in works and certainly never from a sense of Christian obligation. We are life giving when we are the effect of His Spirit spontaneously manifesting through us.
‘For in Christ [and now in you] all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form’ Col 2.9 NIV. This is to say that you as yourself are a bodily representation of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Is that awesome or what?!
When Christ is our life we are life. It’s that simple and that powerful. You have life in yourself and you are alive because God is alive and shedding forth His Spirit not only in you but as you. There’s an ecstatic pleasure in having Jesus in you. Your soul is full and you are always ready to shower sparks of life.
Saw this today in Facebook. Here you will find many ‘do gooder’ sayings, all well- meaning and noble in themselves but in which we have no prospect of living consistently. They are not spirit and life. Nothing that is not one with our Father is. But there are some apostolic sayings to be pondered originating in those who are sons - pieces of wisdom and revelation that come from those who are one with Father. These folks are not any better than others. They just live in their inheritance. This is one of them:
Simeon Edigbe writes, ‘The tree of life is in me and I eat from it continually and am nourished by the fruits which also heals those that I minister to.’ Simeon has expressed the core of eternal life lived in the present. This is as different to Hagar living and routine Christianity as a piece of cardboard is from a piece of Atlantic Salmon. When Jesus is your life you are alive, you are life, you are a healer and resurrector of dead dreams and blasted hopes. You are a harbinger of eternal life. You bring dead things to life just by being yourself!
Christ is your life. The trinity lives in you. In them you are not only a tree. You are a womb and a fountain of life – when you are not a son of the law or religion but a son of God, infinity springs from your being because you are a life-giving spirit.
