Authentic spirituality is not some effete piety. It’s you living as the son/daughter that you are.
Jesus is the who of you.
Authentic spirituality for us is Jesus’ spirituality. His life in us is welling up to the outside. Unless we allow our own heart and mind to be changed we will minister various degrees of un-life as though this is the life of the gospel. We can purvey our own gospels for selfish reasons, like maintaining the false self. This is the self we are in a status and identity that is external to Christ our life. It’s our self with an ‘other husband.’
Authentic spirituality emanates from the authentic self that is Christ in us – flowing in real life-giving streams from the incarnated trinity active in our being. Richard Rohr writes,
“Authentic spirituality is always first about you—about allowing your own heart and mind to be changed. It’s about getting your own who right. Who is it that is doing the perceiving? Is it your illusory, separate, false self; or is it your True Self, who you are in God?” and again, TRUE BELIEVER
“You begin with your unique divine DNA, an inner destiny as it were, an absolute core that knows the truth about you, a true believer tucked away in the cellar of your being, an imago Dei that begs to be allowed, to be fulfilled, and to show itself. “You were chosen in Christ before the world was made—to stand before God in love—marked out beforehand as fully adopted sons and daughters” (see Ephesians 1: 4-5). This is your True Self. Historically, it was often called “the soul.”’ We can erect a constructed self from law and religion. But it will never be the real us because in this mode we are insulated from our origins in Father and from the core of who we actually are. The true self is Christ expressed as us.
BEING IN GOD AND BEING YOU
‘Being’ comes before doing. With our being in Christ we are who we are in spirit and in truth. Situated in I AM we are the I am of ourselves and more. We are connected to a stream of infinite life flowing from the trinity through us. This is theme of Romans 8: Life in the Spirit.
Jesus Christ is the universal human being. He created us and has redeemed us, not in emulation to abstractions but to be true to our design as sons and daughters of God. You will be a ‘son’ in the Son. But only a worker and slave in the law. So Christ is not only the revelation of Father. He is the revelation of the sons/daughters of God. He is the revelation of you and the only means of you becoming yourself as a son of God.
