His life as your life

If you have lost an ‘identity’ you may have had in your marriage or your career, you may find yourself better off than you think. Traumas like this can be the start of a new life in Jesus. There’s a life in Jesus that is Christianity and a life in Jesus that is Jesus as our life.

There is an identity that is a social construction and identity that is you. Once we have been born again we can grow into who we really are. This assumes that we are part of the genuine rebirth from our Adam into our Jesus and are not dragging around the dead remains of the old covenant – that body of death.

‘Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children’ Gal 4,25. Hagar symbolises law, self-help and alienation.

There are Believers who as ministers of religion have committed their lives to the extension and maintenance of the body of death in the belief that they were helping the Lord. Fortunately their efforts are imbued with Jesus’ grace to some extent. Grace means that God prefers that people have some of Him rather than none of Him, since once Jesus has them, they are positioned to grow into His fullness over time. Nevertheless less, it is better to start with all the truth rather than with a fragment of it since the degree to which we are in error is the degree to which we are still dead in Adam and Moses.

When I was a boy I used to go out with my uncle to collect dead wool which was quite valuable. What used to be a sheep could be found at the butt of a yellow box tree as a pile of bones, ribs and wool – a pathetic collection of what once was a merino sheep. This pitiable pile is a good image of ourselves when we choose to live from the body of death – the law and old covenant – instead of the incarnated Christ igniting our spirit of sonship.

Body of death that Paul speaks of is what some believers think is the Body of Christ. This is a subtle and unfortunate delusion as it leaves us living in a mirage of ourselves and a phantom of the Kingdom of God. Jesus has delivered us from this body of death but many Christians have never delivered themselves into the achievements of Jesus and the spirit and life that is theirs in their union with the trinity.

There is, so to speak a body of life. But this body is the person of Jesus incarnated in you. It’s not the law in you with a touch of ‘Jesus Energising.’ Christ is our life full stop. You are the manifestation of Him and in Him you are one with the trinity – which means you are son in spirit and in truth joined in fellowship with God. This – your joining to God - is the source of your identity as a son/daughter of God. In this relationship you have a real identity that cannot be taken from you. In the law you have no identity at all other than a sinner and the son of a slave woman.

But what does Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son’ Gal 4.30 NIV.

Attached in any way to the law we have an identity as the son of the slave woman. With Jesus alone as our life we are joined to the progeny of the Free Woman – Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ of God, the creator of the sons and daughters of God. In the new testament age we can be the Bride of Christ. Then again we can leave our treasure in ground and be the old Eve.

You can choose you identity by believing the truth.

“During his forty days in the wilderness, Jesus endured temptation in the same way as Adam, in that he was challenged on the basis of identity. The devil came at him with something like this: “If you are the Son of God, do something to prove it; turn these stones into bread!” I think the argument could be made that turning stones into bread might be considered a good thing, but doing anything to prove who you are as a child of God is simply the result of eating from the wrong tree. You and I will fight this battle of identity our entire lives, but I encourage you not to give in to the temptation of “doing” in order to identify yourself spiritually.

You need do nothing to become a son/daughter of God. You already are a son/daughter. Just rest in the spirit of sonship and the son of God will abide in you and His Spirit will manifest as you.
