Writing in The Age a journalist observed that, ‘Brexit is indisputably established as one of the most monumentally stupid pieces of self-inflicted injury by a developed nation this century.’ The other piece of folly would have to be the voting in of Donald Trump as president of The United States. These things happen because people have bought a furphy.
Adam’s life in the knowledge of good and evil began with merchandising – a deal of you like. ‘Believe what I am telling you and there is a reward. You will be ‘as Gods.’ Thus the old covenant was framed in the terms of this kind of culture – obey and live.
This notion remains the core of religion and the engine of the separationist attitudes to this day. ‘I must do something for God to earn His approval before I can begin to live in His life.’ But this ‘bargain’ is not the life of God and not what He has achieved for us. In Jesus He has drawn us into fellowship with Himself. Here we belong and here we will stay. Just agree with this and be done with the buying and selling attitude that is the stuff of all religion.
‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God’ Eph 2.8 ESV.
The ‘contract’ is the heart of the religious performance orientation.
Either you will attempt to buy Gods favour by personal good works or marketers of religion will attempt to offer you the union with God – that is already yours – if you join with them. If you support their partisan hoops and keys that purport to be the way and the life you can expect some ‘bonus.’ But any addition to the Gospel of Jesus, John and Paul is a fraud and a lie that turns otherwise healthy Christians into cripples.
People lacking in spiritual discernment – grope about in confusion because they have been sold an alternative gospel and they have given their lives in on-selling it to others. But you don’t have to be a marketer of religion or a Christian consumer. You already have free access to the bread of life. Christ is in you and more. The Trinity lives ‘in’ the Believer.
Richard Rohr writes, “Do you think the soul is satisfied with this “buying and selling in the temple”? It will never be. Seeing the world in terms of such transactions will never satisfy the soul or feed the spirit because they mask reality. The purpose of prayer and religious seeking is to see the truth about reality, is to see what is. And at the bottom of what is always goodness. The foundation is always love.” (1)
Your soul will never be satisfied with an old covenant mindset in the new covenant age. Your heart suspects there is more. And there is. Your spirit longs to be re-joined to its Source. Your life is Christ. You are one with God. God lives in you. And you are a son/daughter of God. None of this is of yourselves. It is the gift of God.
