Years ago after a particularly challenging part of my life I came across a saying by Dr Gordon Moyes. ‘Christianity is not a religion. It’s a Person.’ This realisation can change our lives from a life lived in religion to a life that is Christ our life. It’s an unfortunate fact that masses of Believers don’t know the difference between Christ our life and Christianity. They think ‘Christ our life’ means living Christianity. It does not. Christ our life means INCARNATION – the trinity in you. This is what it means to live in our new covenant inheritance.
CHANNELS OF HIS LIFE
The new covenant is Christ incarnated in us. It is His sonship manifesting as our sonship. This is the kind of sonship that is actual and not notional - the spirit and truth kind.
‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV. If we have not emerged from the old covenant we will not know that we are not speaking words of spirit and life, since we have not entered that realm of light and life ourselves.
SPIRIT AND LIFE
We can be very active in “Christian Service.’ There is activity that multiplies spirit and life and activity that multiplies nothing of the Kingdom. The latter is ‘something and nothing work or speech’ that fills a religious space but has no real effect on the advance of the new creation, other than to impede it with the kind of effort that is earnest but outside ‘what Jesus is doing now’. It can sound like earnest preaching because it is. But it is ‘something and nothing’ because it lacks that which promotes heaven on earth: spirit and life.
‘Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you’ John 6.63.
If we live in a law-conditioned religious mode the above scripture will pass us by like a sparrow flying out of a barn. If we are seeking life as was Nicodemus, Jesus will lead us through the mystery into the reality - that Christ is ingested into us in the Spirit. He really does ‘become us’ and we do what Jesus is doing in the moment and in the season. EATING LIFE
We can eat life or we can eat ‘junk food.’
‘Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me’ John 6.57 NIV. We live because of Jesus and this living is the life that is His life as our life.
Do you have to DO SOMETHING to be awarded the incarnation? Yes and no. You must believe you are already incarnated.
HIS NEW CREATION
By rising from the dead on the first day of the week, Jesus undid Adam and Moses and began Himself. He began the new covenant age of Jesus come in the flesh of individuals and of humanity. We are accustomed to think of the work of anti-christ as gross sins of wickedness and they may be. But the work of the anti-christ spirit is more subtle and more persuasive. It undoes the achievement of Christ come in us and replaces it with ‘us and our best efforts come in us’.
There are denominations that have never lived from the new covenant; never lived from Christ Himself as our life. There are numerous Believers who have lived a hybrid of old and new covenant – part of law and part of Christ because they have not been taught the real prize of the cross: Christ our life. Paul and John taught it but by 200 AD life in the Spirit had subsided into institutionalism. The church as an institution is not the mediator of a Better Covenant. Jesus is. God is the mediator of Himself and God lives in you.
Michael Kapler puts it this way. Michael is not what you would call a celebrity pastor. But he is a representative of the new and living way which is the NARROW WAY that differs from the way of the institutionalised knowledge of good and evil. He writes,
POISON IN THE STEW
“Much like Adam, it’s unfortunate many people with a desire to please God are still eating from that tree today instead of abiding in the Tree of Life (Christ). There was nothing wrong with the tree itself, just as there is nothing wrong with the law, but they both had something in common. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil represents the law, and it was ordained to show us humans that we would be unable to find life in the effort of our morality, ethics, or principles, which is just a new twist on an old approach. How do we know this? Through the works of the law, no one is justified, because it is the law that brings about the knowledge of sin (see Romans 3:20)”.(1)
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” Gal 2.20.21 NIV.
Fortunately it is the law that can lead us to Christ - if we are teachable and are not so committed to investing our perspectives with the dignity of Christ’s Gospel - when what we live by is another gospel of the kind Paul warned against.
“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!” Gal 1.8 NIV.
