It matters little what religion schooled us in our ideas of God. What counts is our willingness to follow Jesus wherever His revelation leads. Those who have made this commitment find themselves encountering God’s truth. Because they have made Jesus their life they become privy not only to the mind of Christ but to a continuous encounter with God as God is. They live in the company of Father, Son and Holy Spirit and flourish in a climate of revelation that exposes them to the mentoring and exquisite nurture of each member of the trinity. Here they learn who God is and who they are. Richard Rohr writes,
“Divine knowing—some would call it spiritual intuition—is actually an allowing of someone else to know in us, through us, for us, and even as us. It demands what I often call an “identity transplant.” (1).
Such an identity transplant is being born again. It’s the difference between the fuzzy vision of religion and the sharp eye-sight of spiritual discernment.
POST CROSS LIVING
We were made to live in God. Jesus walked us back into union with God to live in fellowship with the trinity by His life, his death and His resurrection. Because of the incarnation we are in God and He is in us. Jesus said that those who realize it would be part of God and God part of them. ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20.
In realizing this and living it we become the expression of His thought and being. The cost of rejecting this inheritance is to be tied to formulations sourced in the knowledge of good and evil - or in the case of those tied to the law, joined to an ideology rather than to a life. There’s a reason why some of us can be imparters of information rather than distributors of spirit and life.
MORE THAN A REFORMULATION OF THE TREE
Our life in God is much more than intellectual or academic formulations. This life is real when Christ has come in our flesh. In which case we are the manifestation of His truth. Truth is seldom found in the consensus of several academics – if they are not living from the new covenant. Truth is true because it is. Truth is the I AM of Jesus expressed as the wisdom and revelation manifest through you. In Jesus the way, the truth and the life are one. All of life and light is contained in Him. This light and life finds expression in those who have received Him in unadulterated new covenant simplicity.
Yet there is a consensus emerging around Paul’s declaration that Christ is our life and the key fact of the new testament age: The incarnation. Powerful and creative intellectual minds are expressing the unpolluted truth of Christ our life for us today. Their insights are sourced from the trinity – the life hub of the universe. They are inspired, penetrating and sharper than a two-edged sword because they are not an expression of the letter. They are the expression of the Living Word who is in them. The word of God is a person. Not an ideology or a belief system.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart Heb 4.12 NIV. The living word in us distinguishes between spirit and flesh, kingdom and religion and wisdom and obscurantist humbug.
To have a passion for Jesus is to have a passion for the truth. We might have a passion for the truth, that can result in us getting into the ambit of Jesus. But truth in itself is an abstraction in the separated realm of Adamic thought. Truth is alive when we are in God and He in us. Truth is a relationship well described as ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20
Jesus will speak to us in order to draw us into the truth of Himself. This is the work of Holy Spirit and the ‘hound of heaven.’ Jesus seeks to draw us into truth because truth is life and a distortion of truth is death. Participate in a false narrative and we begin to die. Head to the truth and we experience increasing degrees of life. If the Spirit of Truth can become part of us so can the spirit of anti-life.
Don’t be among those who perpetrate degrees of death out of loyalty to cunningly devised fables designed to trip up and diminish the sons of God into ideological ciphers.
ALL THE WAY
We can do better than follow Jesus to the edges of ‘what we have always believed.’ To know life to the full; to know ourselves and to know God we must be prepared to follow – to follow Jesus and to follow Him without condition. Conditional following results in stalemate and stagnation in lesser degrees of life – which is to say in death. We can be dead men walking and blind women talking because we stopped at the edge of our denominational beliefs and refused to follow His leading.
Those who stall may glimpse God and get the occasional download. But the pure in heart – the unconditionally committed to following Jesus wherever He may go ‘see God,’ know themselves and experience ever more degrees of spirit and life. Richard Rohr writes, “We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking.” This is because we are not adhering to some version of the knowledge of good and evil. We are not captured like a fly in some positional matrix. We are in God and He is in us and we fly like eagles.
