The nature of the ‘children’ we bear depends on the husband to whom we are married. Joe McIntyre writes, “Paul likens our union with the resurrected Christ to a marriage. In Romans seven he explains: ‘Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another - to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.’ Romans 7:4. Here Joe implies that if we are still alive to the law we are not married to the body of Christ.
NOT MARRIED TO THE LAW He continues, ‘No longer under an outward standard in order to bring forth fruit, we trust in our union with Christ to produce Christ-like living. We are married in spirit to the resurrected Christ. Out of that union we bring forth fruit. ‘But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.’ What an amazing Truth! Our human spirit is joined to the Lord and we are now one spirit with Him” 1 Corinthians 6:17.
Clearly, one with Jesus we have become the expression of Him. Sons and daughters are the expression of our Father. Here we are not only an evidence of righteousness - because we are more than a jumble of good deeds and fruits. We ourselves are sons and daughters of God. We are beings of life. Christ come in our flesh means that Christ manifests by the Spirit as us. This is to say that Bob and Jane are the manifestation of Christ. This I much more than the Believer attempting to dress Himself with a bunch of virtues. It is Jesus expressing Himself as a son/daughter of God.
We might go into David Jones and purchase some fashionable clothes. But handsomely dressed as we might be we are still who we are before we put on the gear. When we are received into Christ’s life we receive Him as our life. We become who He is as our unique selves. There’s a difference between one who is attempting to put on virtues and one who is virtue - as we are as sons and daughters. Now we are the expression of God’s life; a manifestation of God. We can be more than ‘Christ-like.’ We can be who we are: The Sons and daughters of God.
The single most important truth for you and us all is this: You are an included son/daughter of God. ‘Included’ as in ‘You belong to the Family of God.’
An exciting adventure in life is the unlearning of humbug that poses as sound doctrine. This can be challenging if we have indoctrinated ourselves into our personal fears as well as the misguided ideas of those who had sought to help us – but who themselves lived hobbled as captives to myths and deceits. But we can know the real Christ and His genuine gospel if our heart are married to one husband. Qualities that will propel us into the fullness of God’s truth about Himself and about us are an unconditional and undiluted loyalty to Jesus, humility and a willingness to grow by starting over.
“The famous preacher, Charles Spurgeon, said that God has filled our bank account with tremendous riches but we must learn to write checks and make withdrawals. This is a great illustration of our redemption. Christ has accomplished a perfect work for us. The Holy Spirit is unfolding a perfect work in us. Christ’s work is fully accomplished. The Holy Spirit’s work is progressive. As we keep our eyes on Jesus and His Finished Work, the Spirit unfolds in us the treasure in our earthen vessels. All the glory is His, but the benefits are ours!” (1)
There once was a ship named Bob. He lived in a bottle. He possessed every detail of a real ship, except that he had never seen the sea or realised that the bottle was not his world. One day a small child took the bottle outside to play with it in a storm. The gutters were brimming with water and the little boy intended to send the bottle for a float. Instead he dropped it. The bottle shattered and the ship eventually found itself carried out to sea. As small as Bob was, his entrance to the real world began his growth into a real ship.
SHADOWS TO LIGHT
When Jesus allows events to shatter our assumed reality our illusions fall down and we are able to glimpse the real world. Reality is always Christ. He beckons you to become the real you by embracing who you are in Him and living in the place He has already put you. Are you up to the challenge? “The Holy Spirit has been given to us to show us the reality of our union with Christ. The things of the Spirit can be obscure to us, but He has come to witness to our spirits that these things are true and real.” (2)
‘Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation’ Gal 6.15 NIV.
The fact of our new covenant life is that we are joined to the Lord as in marriage. We have as Frank Viola has said ‘Become a new Eve.’ We have come out of the side of the new Adam and are part of His being. This is us as the body of Christ and the Bride of Christ. We are part of Jesus, yet all of us together complete Him. The fullness of Christ is expressed from our marriage to Christ. We are the new Eve of the New Adam. This is Christ come in our flesh. This is the core of our new creation life. As part of Him we produce sons for God. Joined to other husbands we produce tares.
