Most of us have been raised in the illusion of separation. The fact that Jesus is you and is becoming you in Christian growth is a surprise to many Believers who have been raised to jump through hoops and ‘do things’ to earn the approval of God. Yet this is the fuller meaning of life in the Spirit of Christ.
An old covenant mindset – for that’s what it is (obey and live) debilitates our sonship and vitiates the degree of spirit and life that could be in our deeds and our ministry but is not. Because what we are doing for others can be not so much about them but really about us in survival mode. We are talking about the incarnation: This is the foundation of your sonship and of the Kingdom of God in the post cross world.
“To see the massive scope and cosmic ramification of the incarnation of Jesus challenges everything we thought we knew about the fate of mankind. It is not just that God was bound up in Christ … but in Christ, He bound the entire created order to Himself. Something was utterly completed on behalf of the universe in His life, death and resurrection. “God was in Christ reconciling the cosmos to Himself” (2 Cor. 5:19). (1)
The message is not so much that you must receive Christ, but that Christ has received you into His life and communion with God. You have been united with the parent rock. You are even now rooted in the trinity. What is your part? Believe it and agree with it and live from where He has positioned you.
It is the incarnation that frames the meaning of the words Body of Christ. It is the fact that Christ is actually in the Believer, imbued in her being that makes Christ our life and more. It is Christ’s relationship with God – the trinity and its persons that becomes ours by virtue of the spirit of adoption. The Spirit of adoption is a person – Christ in you and as a result you in the Father. God is manifest in Christ and in you. Karl Barth writes,
“In Jesus Christ there is no isolation of man from God or of God from man. Rather, in Him we encounter the history, the dialogue, in which God and man meet together and are together, the reality of the covenant MUTUALLY contracted, preserved, and fulfilled by them. Jesus Christ is in His one Person, as true GOD, MAN'S loyal partner, and as true MAN, GOD'S. He is the Lord humbled for communion with man and likewise the Servant exalted to communion with God.” (2)
I person I knew well sought intimacy with God by earning it. For her the Christian project we undoing separation. This is the common religious response. No. You are one with God – even in your lowest moments of self-disgust.
‘Realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
Because of the enterprise of God – the initiative of Father, Son and Holy Spirit you can live in real fellowship with God. This companionship depends not on your performance but on His already accomplished performance: the undoing of the separation wrought by Adam and the bestowing of the oneness of Christ with Father on you.
