CHRIST YOUR LIFE

His life as your life

INIQUITY UNDONE

There were two lies implicit in Satan’s deceit that led to the fall. One was that Father could not be trusted. The other was that Adam and Eve (the human race) were not enough. This was promoted by the third lie – the lie that they were not ‘as Gods’. But they were. Adam and Eve were the son and daughter of God. The essence of this lie was later to be made explicit in the words of Tolkien

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

J. R. R. TolkienThe Fellowship of the Ring, 1954, chapter 2.

What is the nature of the ring and the darkness? It’s the idea that by adding something to what God has given us and made us we add to ourselves, gaining a strength and vitality that we do not yet possess. This ‘strength can vary from ordinary carnality and its justifications as necessary to achieve the ‘good’ to what C S Lewis called ‘that hideous strength.’ Whatever the case this spiritual alchemy produces degrees of death by the suffocation of spirit and life.

This illusion – that something precious can be added to our inheritance in God through separation plus efforts of our own - has been rightly named as ‘the great darkness.’ It is explicit in godlessness and implicit wherever there is stubborn adherence to the law and resistance to the new covenant and Christ as our life. It is seen in the foetid strength that accrues wherever the gospel of Christ our life is rejected in favour of our gospel as our lie.

But this darkness is being undone by the light. Adam’s darkness has been undone by the light of the world who entered human darkness and undid it from within. The darkness of the lie is being exposed because the darkness cannot quench the light and because God’s people are intent in walking in His light instead of inventing their own light.

‘The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.’ John 1.1-4 NLT.

Speaking on the adventure of advancing light, John Crowder writes,

“The existence of darkness rests only in the power of a lie. Men are in bondage only by living in the insecurity, fear and despondency of a false identity that never truly existed from God’s perspective. Alienated from God in their minds, because no one has told them they’ve already been reconciled to Him. But the lights have now been turned on. From the apostolic age until now, who has clearly articulated to them who they really are … that the old self – the fallen Adamic era – was completely crucified with Christ before the world began and they have been liberated from decay?” (1)

Lies embedded as good theology are being undone by apostolic teachers and ordinary folks of undiluted faith who are alive in themselves because Christ is their life and in Him they live as a normal life the spiritual reality that is Christ come in their flesh. The result is that with the incarnation active in their being, they are woven into God and God is woven into them. They are people of spirit and life.

“The Lord is opening our eyes to what various streams and tributaries have tasted in part throughout the Church age. Several important themes are converging at the moment: finished work theology; the miraculous; a revelation of the Trinity and happy, creative daily human existence in the incarnational life. All of these concepts are intrinsically woven together. A new, reformed Christ-centered mysticism is on the rise. Rather, a rediscovery of something ancient. It is bridging many streams. Relevant is its cultural approach. Radical is its charismatic fervour. Liberating is its theology of the Triune God of grace.”(2)

‘Mysticism’ is not vapour, as some people think. It’s actually what is meant by
life in the Spirit – a lived life in which Believers are companions of each member of the trinity and are actually participants in the real being of God and a manifestation of God – as the sons and daughters they are in spirit and in truth.
